Washington area farmers welcomed a total of 1.11 inches of rain over Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. The official observer logged .32 inches before 7 am and .79 inches by 10 am, with gentle showers and little wind helping soak the topsoil in a critical development period.
Former President Lyndon B. Johnson who had been hospitalized three days with angina pectoris was flown by helicopter from Brooke General Hospital to his ranch. A hospital spokesman said the chest pains did not constitute a heart attack and his physician described the illness as angina.
Police say an 18-year-old, Terry Sorter, faces pending charges in the shooting death of 36-year-old Lawrence D. Davis. Davis was found with a head wound at Sorter’s mother's home and died at Broadlawns Polk County Hospital after the early morning incident.
The FTC announced that Americans bought a record 547.2 billion cigarettes in 1971 and urged Congress to strengthen health warnings and fund government antismoking messages across newspapers radio and television. The agency noted the year surpassed the prior high of 540.3 billion units sold in 1968.
Des Moines UPI executive director John Montgomery said plans are under way to extend educational television to northeast and northwest Iowa. He cited a HEW funding application for channel 32 in northeast Iowa and an FCC construction-permit filing.
Riverside and West Chester teams may stage a third challenge at the Washington County Fair. The two centennials saw each side win on their home grounds, and a Wednesday meet at the fairgrounds is planned. Frank Dea of Washington challenged the winner, with more communities rumored to enter. In Jacksonville Florida four children aged 9 to 12 played in a backyard tent when a line of thunder squalls formed a small tornado. The tent was lifted and carried about 350 feet before landing. Paul Smith Rose Ann Smith Richard Smith and Belinda Cowart escaped with minor cuts and bruises and were treated at a local hospital then released.
The Commerce Department reported a 0.5 percent rise in its index of leading economic indicators for June, with May revised to a 1.4 percent gain and a 4.2 percent second quarter rise. While imports outpaced exports again, the six month trade deficit hit a record high of 3.343 billion. Assistant Secretary Harold Passer said the trend signals continued growth through 1973 despite some weak indicators.
Two top administrators Marie Carter and Harold Sadderis resign from the State Girls Training School at Mitchellville amid pressure from a legislative investigation into conditions. Deputy Commissioner Kevin Burns rushes to Mitchellville as protests by about 61 residents and staff unfold criticizing the probe.
Judge Ira F. Morrison granted The Living Word Inc a property tax exemption on about 66 acres of timber and pasture land near Richmond overturning the county auditor's denial. He ruled the land is used solely for religious purposes and not leased for profit, noting the site is being developed as a church camp and thus qualifies for tax relief.
Jeff Boshart Washington Andy Rowe Wellman and Sandy Lewis Brighton led the Washington County 4-H Presentation contest at the YMCA earning top honors and earning berths to the August Iowa State Fair. Other blue and red ribbon winners across junior intermediate and senior divisions were named by club and presentation titles.
Roger Schloss of Riverside was named chairman of the Washington County American Red Cross chapter succeeding retiring David Miksch. Other officers include Charles Snyder vice chair, Jerry Bryan treasurer, Mrs. Lawrence Miksch secretary, Winnie Belter executive secretary.
