Firemen Object To Rails Plan

Washington NPI Firemen Union President H E Gilbert urged Congress to place railroad rules talks in a goldfish bowl under congressional direction to avert a strike. He opposed Kennedy's plan to hand the dispute to the Interstate Commerce Commission and proposed continued bargaining under joint congressional oversight. Gilbert stressed the work rule issue could affect about 32 500 firemen and noted the union would accept a formula eliminating 5 500 jobs, while Wirtz sought precise positions from carriers and unions as mediation continued. The railroads postponed new rules until August 29, and Wirtz announced resumed talks to maintain progress amid the 90 day delay.
