US Navy jets protected American commercial airliners from potential Red China intercepts near Hainan as Western pilots observed multiple Communist color schemes nearby. Pan American and Air France crews reported silver and colored jets while U.S. and allied officials prepared protests and diplomatic actions.
Girls planning to attend the annual YWCA camp at the Lake Darling Youth Center should reserve now. The week of August 15 to 21 features a $14 fee covering all costs except craft materials and horseback riding. A cook nurse and competent staff are arranged, with a full schedule of camping activities and final instructions to be sent after reservations.

The Iowa Supreme Court on Monday ruled trade stamps legal and the 44 year old gift enterprises law unconstitutional by a 6 to 3 vote, upholding a Polk County injunction that barred state prosecutions of stamp companies. The ruling supports Sperry and Hutchinson Co. against state officials led by Atty. Gen. Leo Hoegh.
At a special Washington Golf and Country club stockholders meeting Monday evening proponents of beer sales moved to drop the issue. The directors had called the meeting in response to a petition requesting beer be sold on the club premises.
Temperatures soared across the Southwest with record highs in Texas and a marathon heat wave. Illinois Governor Stratton urged federal aid designating 41 southern counties as emergency areas to aid farmers with federal loans. Senator Douglas called for immediate action to relieve Midwest and Southwest farmers.
Des Moines report shows Sen. Guy M. Gillette accusing powerful interest groups of manipulating the Republican Party for profit. He says Congress will be the 1953 election issue while praising Democrats for aiding President Eisenhower. Cherokee Democrat Gillette seeks re election.
Senate filibuster against the atomic energy bill returns as Democratic opponents organize renewed long speeches. Sen. Wayne Morse maintains the floor, with Sen. Len Clark Anderson and Sen. Knowland trading accusations over who stalled debate and who should yield. Morse vows to continue if needed.
Bloomfield Iowa UP two confessed slayers Karl Karston 29 and Almer Anderson 22 were brought back to face murder charges for the killing of Wendell Jones 56 Pulaski farmer. They admitted robbing Ottumwa filling stations and fled after a car pursuit and river crossing.
Virtually complete returns show Gov Allan Shivers leading Ralph Yarborough by about 18 000 votes with a runoff set for August 28. Texas Election Bureau counts 650 919 for Shivers and 632 040 for Yarborough with two minor candidates totaling 35 600. Lyndon Johnson was easily renominated with 840 287 to 332 175 for Dudley Doutherty.
Memorial services for James Edwin McConnell known as Smilin Ed will be at Congregational Church in Corona Del Mar. The 62 year old former host of Smilin Eds Gang died of a heart attack on his boat in Newport Beach Saturday.
In a special election Wayland residents approved a plan to own and operate jointly with neighboring towns and townships fire apparatus equipment and facilities and to provide for purchase rental maintenance or housing of such equipment. Jefferson township also approved the proposal with 75 in favor 12 against and four spoiled ballots in the primary voting.
Louis J. Kehoe spoke to the Washington Rotary Club on International Rotary and its role in world affairs. He urged unity among Western nations to counter Communism and noted its potential to promote peace and understanding.
Rain hungry Iowa farm land will stay dry in most of the state with temperatures 5 to 10 degrees above normal for five days. Precipitation will average one fourth to one half inch in the north, little or none in the south, says Des Moines Weather Bureau.
Iowa Democrats opened their State convention in Des Moines with strong attacks planned against Republicans on labor and farm policies. They back rigid parity price supports at 90 percent, criticize the labor plank, and push repeal of the union shop ban. The primary agenda includes electing Central Committee members and a keynote by L. E. Plummer for attorney general.
Grace Lohmann RN takes over as Nurse Supervisor at the Washington County Health Unit succeeding Harriet Oxley Nutty. A Burlington Hospital graduate with a public health degree from Western Reserve, she served three years in the Navy Nurse Corps and has worked as staff nurse with the Visiting Nurse Association in Des Moines and six years as county public nurse in Des Moines county. She will advise public health nursing across fifteen southeastern Iowa counties.
Police in Fort Dodge arrested Delmer Dean Nehman and Charles Nicholas Mortenson after three break ins. They admitted stealing 31400 along with a loaf of bread and a bite of cold meat from the recreation parlor, a grocery store, and a lumber store.
Reliable French sources report Premier Pierre Mendes-France plans a late September trip to Washington to meet President Eisenhower and discuss key issues. The announcement emphasizes forthcoming talks between the two leaders.
Grinnell Iowa voters voted 1 088 against and 801 in favor of a 432000 bond to finance construction of new grade school facilities. Officials said the funds would build two seven room elementary schools and repair a third.
The West Chester band presents its final summer concert at 8 p m directed by Irvan Rich. The program features fourteen numbered pieces.
Chancellor Adenauer acts after Otto John vanished into Soviet Berlin and is reportedly guarded at Russian headquarters in Potsdam. Soviet agents questioned John while Western officials suspect coercion. a Communist broadcast claims he went east voluntarily.
Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden announced Britain protests on behalf of the United States against Red China for attacks on American planes over the China Sea and the downing of a British airliner near Hainan Island. Ten lives, including three Americans, were lost. Eden said protests were sent to Peiping through London. Albany note adds a history volume on Sir William Johnson.
James Merle Fawkell twenty from Mason City was killed when his car hit a south Mason City on U S 65 head on. Aloise Bowers twenty also from Mason City was listed in fair condition in a local hospital. Fawkell a Marine Corps corporal was on thirty day leave. police said they are investigating.
Weather outlook for Iowa calls for fair to partly cloudy skies tonight and Wednesday with scattered thundershowers in the northwest and extreme north. Continued warmth with tonight’s low 66 to 70 and Wednesday afternoon highs 90 to 96. Thursday remains partly cloudy and warm with a chance of a few thunderstorms Wednesday night or early Thursday. Temperatures next five days will run 5 to 10 degrees above normal, with normal highs 88 and lows 62 to 65. Precipitation expected at one quarter to one half inch north, little to none south, with occasional showers especially Wednesday and Thursday.
