Trainman missing after freight train plunges into river in CALAMUS Iowa
Divers searched for Ed Anderson 24 a Chicago and North Western Railway trainman missing feared dead after the engine of a 200 car freight train plunged from a collapsed bridge into the Wapsipinicon River. Fellow trainman Steve Sivertsen 30 Clinton was in guarded condition at a DeWitt hospital. He reported a track peculiarity as the train neared the bridge two miles west of Calamus.

The four day Washington County 4 H and FFA Fair opened amid thundershowers as exhibitors sheltered in showbarns with cattle sheep swine and horses. Tractor pull proceeds as planned though a parade of antique engines and tractors may delay to Tuesday if rain persists. Judging began on schedule with dairy heifers goats poultry and rabbits leading the first afternoon events as rain continued and more livestock arrived.

Intruder shot near White House in fencing incident
A White House intruder, Chester Plummer Jr., 30, climbed the north fence with a steel pipe and was shot by an Executive Protective Service officer as he advanced toward the mansion. Plummer died after emergency surgery at George Washington University Hospital. The incident occurred while President and Mrs. Ford were in the family quarters. Police said the drifter had no fixed address and had shown no motive or signs of animosity.
