In Boone Iowa six children drown at Des Moines River while at a family picnic. The Erwin and Schoenbaum children, cousins, aged 5 to 13, waded beyond parental limits after being told to wait. Officials say they stepped from a sand bar into a deep hole.
High school students from across the United States enroll in a University of Iowa summer program for high-ability learners. Participants like Douglas Smylie Davenport Mark Schoeberl and Stuart Kolesick join geology discussions after classes. The program, ending August 4, features project work field trips seminars and visits to research laboratories funded by the National Science Foundation.
President Johnson created a national commission on law enforcement and justice led by Attorney General Katzenbach to study crime causes and recommend federal state and local actions. State Treasurer Paul Franzenburg cited vulnerability to robbery and urged careful hiring of competent police, with capitol officers armed while ground patrols stay limited to tear gas. A recent rear-door incident prompted the security discussion.
A US Navy Phantom P40 was shot down near Hanoi amid reports a Soviet style surface to air missile fired from a camouflaged mobile launcher may have caused the loss. Official sources cautioned that initial indications point to a missile but confirmation is pending. Meanwhile Marines and Vietnamese forces killed 25 guerrillas near Chu Lai in a major sweep. US carrier air action south of Hanoi included bombing bridges and barracks 250 miles south.

Washington County Sheriff's office probes a break-in at the Farmers Co op Elevator in Keota Sunday evening. About $1,100 in articles stolen and $150 in damage from a front glass entry and back door break. Items taken include a calculator adding machine check protector and portable typewriter. Office files and two pickup trucks outside were rifled. Investigating.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce will run free buses between the county fair grounds and the square for all four days of the annual fair from August 2 to 5. Buses depart Central Park near the band stand on the hour, with return trips from the fair grounds at 15 minutes past the hour. Service runs daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Mrs. Ruth Schulty observed her second anniversary as proprietor of Ruths Antiques last Saturday. Last January 1 she took over the Boyd Magazine Agency from her brother Reid Boyd. The agency has operated continuously for 30 years.
Mild conditions return as storms flood Colorado Kentucky and Tennessee. A two inch rain near Denver slowed U S routes with flood waters. two dead and three missing in Colorado and a derailment injures three. Eight deaths blamed on flash floods in eastern Tennessee and western Kentucky as storms stretch from Texas to the Ohio Valley.
United Press International reports Iowa will see considerable cloudiness tonight with partial clearing Tuesday. Thunderstorms over 20 percent of the state, with a low in the mid 60s tonight and highs in the 80s on Tuesday.
A weekend of Iowa crashes left nine dead and several injured. On Interstate 80 near Mitchellville a station wagon veered across the median and toppled onto another car killing Rudolph Lindholm 65 and Hazel Lindholm 65 of Burlington and Charles W Sharp 62 of Glendale Calif. Sharp's wife Viola was hospitalized. The Maroses of Newton escaped with their lives after their car bumped the Lindholm vehicle. Additional fatalities occurred near Manchester Dysart Britt Blencoe and Oelwein as drivers and riders perished or were injured in head-on crashes and rollovers across multiple counties. The toll for 1965 rose to 365.
