Kalona Barbecue Days Draw Near 6000 Crowd

A large Kalona crowd packed the streets for the two day Barbecue Days event. A massive parade opened Tuesday morning, followed by free barbecue lunches, horse shows, and a busy carnival in the business district. Radio stars from Cedar Rapids performed Tuesday evening and a tractor pulling contest complemented the festivities sponsored by the Kalona Community Club.

Police Friends Say Last Goodbyes To Charles Rowland Today

Charles Clayton Rowland 80 is to be buried at Glendale Cemetery today with a police guard. Des Moines meter maids and supervisor Patrolman Tony Mihalovich befriended him last Christmas, giving a party and ongoing support. They visited for coffee and collected funds for food, turning a lonely pensioner's life into a season of friendship.

Miami waiter charged in hijacking of Eastern Air Lines plane

Two Cars Damaged In Crash Near Washington

Two cars were badly damaged in a crash at an intersection on old highway 92 miles west of Washington at 4 10 pm. John Sherman of Washington driven vehicle was wrecked. Steven Louis Brown of Washington was passing when collision occurred. Brown owned by Guinn F McQuistion of Sandpoint Idaho. Both drivers received minor injuries and were treated at Washington County Hospital. Another accident on old highway No 1 one mile north of Washington left a car driven by David Vinton damaged after leaving the road early this morning.

Jones Attends Iowa Marketing Workshop in Des Moines

J H Jones of Ainsworth attended Iowa’s first Agricultural Marketing Workshop at Fort Des Moines Hotel in Des Moines. Industry leaders from beet, dairy, grain, horticulture, poultry, sheep and swine discussed plans to sell Iowa agriculture more effectively. Jones, director of the Iowa Swine Producers Association, represented the organization at the all-day conference sponsored by the Iowa Department of Agriculture marketing division.

Swift Rites Scheduled Thursday Afternoon

Funeral services for Mr. Etta Swift will be held at 1:15 p.m. in the Jones Funeral Home. The Rev. Vernon G. Elgin will preside with burial at Elm Grove Cemetery. American Legion Auxiliary members will meet at the library at 1:15 p.m. to attend the services as a group.

Rilla Warren of Ainsworth Dies at 64

Rilla Jane Warren 64 of Ainsworth died after a three month illness. Funeral services set for Friday at 1 30 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home with Rev H F DeVries officiating and Elm Grove Cemetery interment. She was born July 7 1897 in Ainsworth. Survivors include two brothers Wilbur and Sam and seven sisters.

Lows tonight in the 60s northeast to low 70s southwest. Highs Thursday in the 80s. Partly cloudy Friday with little temperature change. Five day outlook shows temperatures averaging 56 below normal with rainfall average to moderate. Rainfall expected as showers and thunderstorms tonight Saturday and Sunday, amounts one to three inches.
