Reports from Tom Robb county extension director show rising grasshopper damage. New seedings are eaten. farmers are urged to inspect feeds and spray a strip around fields and a center lane to divert grasshoppers away from hay and mow lines.
President Eisenhower told the nation that both the United States and Russia must show willingness to compromise at October’s Geneva foreign ministers conference. He called the fall meeting an acid test of the new spirit of reconciliation and urged continued pressure toward peaceful settlement. He warned against assuming quick success and stressed that nuclear warfare would be race death by one’s own action.
The Senate completed action on a sweeping reserve plan requiring compulsory training for youths as part of Eisenhower s long range New Look strategy. The bill sets five years total service with two years active duty and three in the ready reserve, subject to a presidential signature.
Washington city council approves five to ten percent pay raises for city employees effective August 1 while trimming the coming year budget reducing the millage rate from about 26 to 23 mills. Ray mond Crone sworn in as councilman from the fourth ward to fill a vacancy.
RED OAK Iowa UP three youths were held in $2500 bond each on charges of breaking and entering the Villisca Fruit and Grocery Co. They confessed to the grocery theft Friday and $52 was recovered. Dean Coltrain 18 Don Wardin 17 both Des Moines and Marlyn Kimberling 17 Kansas City faced the charges.

Clarence Stewart Cook, the final fugitive in the $82,000 basement theft at a bakery operator, surrendered after his sister persuaded him at a Holton Indiana farm. He admitted spending $1,925 on a 1953 car and implicated Dayton associates while Dayton police questioned 11 others, including surrendering Dwayne Allen Link.
Iowa baked under a hot sun with highs predicted to reach 102 for the second straight day Wednesday. Scattered showers were expected tonight and again late Wednesday into Thursday with no heat relief until late Thursday or Friday. Des Moines Weather Bureau pegged highs 96 to 102 and overnight lows in the upper 70s as records for the year appeared to be challenged.
LeRoy Letts of Washington Iowa, 21, was given a five year term at Fort Madison State Prison after pleading guilty to a rape charge. He was arrested May 23 at Leon in connection with an incident at Colfax, according to Sheriff Ed Scoville.
Senate investigators questioned Air Force Secretary Harold E. Talbott about using a government lawyer to represent him in a private deal. General Counsel John A. Johnson testified Talbott pressed for action on a RCA contract with Mulligan & Co. and that Johnson offered an official opinion on legality.
Iowa attorney general reports 62 more establishments purchased federal retail liquor stamps bringing total since July 1 to 384, not counting 180 for state stores. Names sent to Atty. Gen. Dayton Countryman. raises watch on stamp holders to enforce liquor laws.
A marriage license has been issued here to Loren Spicher of Kalona and Yvonne Kallous of Richmond.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles announced the Geneva summit reduced danger of war and improved U S Soviet relations enabling diplomacy without fear of conflict. He cited German reunification in reach and Western unity strong while noting upcoming talks with Red China on a ceasefire in the Formosa straits.
Washington County farmers and families plan to attend the thirty seventh annual Cattle Feeders Day at Iowa State College on August 4. The program in the ISU Gymnasium will feature 386 cattle and reports on high roughage wintering rations, a low cost corncob based supplement, hog breeding after stilbestrol fed cattle, green clipping feeds, and stilbestrol use on pasture. County Extension Director Tom Robb invites attendees to share rides and leave contact details at the Washington Extension Office.
Fifteen counties will wait until fall to administer the second round of Salk polio vaccines to children. Five other counties have requested and received vaccine for summer second shots. Dr. Ralph Heeren reported 24 new polio cases last week, bringing this year’s total to 112. Names of affected counties include Polk, Johnson, Linn, Black Hawk, Story and others.
Patricia Fitzgerald, 24, suffered cuts on both feet when a runaway power mower sped onto the badminton court and struck her during play in Milwaukee. The incident ended the match and prompted an on-site medical check.
Mr and Mrs Dave Elder depart Washington for a European tour to attend the centennial conference of the world alliance of YMCAs. Elders leads as editor of Ys Men's World and will visit Philadelphia Milan Copenhagen Stockholm Edinburgh and London before returning to New York on September 8.
Norman J. Smith 22 of Iowa City was charged with manslaughter drunken driving and operating a vehicle without a license in police court after his car overturned on a gravel road killing Marjorie Kay Bell 15 of Iowa City eight miles south of town Saturday night. The crash occurred when Smiths car went out of control on a curve.
George Went Hensley, 70 year old founder of a mountain snake handling group, died after a diamond back bite received during a Sunday prayer service in Florida. He collapsed Monday morning at Rhode Roberts home with about 100 mourners nearby. Local sheriff noted no medical aid was sought and the death was recorded as self-inflicted. This marks the 13th fatal bite in snake handling sects since 1940, prompting bans in four states.
Fifty Washington 4-H members arrived in Grand Traverse County Michigan at 3 30 PM on Monday. They were greeted with a playful pirate themed welcome and toured the town aboard a navy duck craft. The group planned tours of sand dunes fruit and general farms with outings to Mackinac Island later in the week. Leaders include Mr and Mrs Don Sheetz Mr and Mrs Bill Ganon Gary Murphy and Neil Hart.
Gov Allan Shivers and conservative Texas Democrats moved to restore ties with the national party by firing Committeeman Wright Morrow. The action aims to reestablish a working agreement after Morrow, unrecognized by the national committee since 1952, aided Eisenhower in Texas amid the tidelands dispute.
