In Jackson Michigan on July 26 a mob pursued Umpire C E Eldredge after controversial calls in a Jackson versus Adrian game. Grandstand railing collapsed injuring nearly twenty, with Alderman John E McGraw and Thomas Seaman among the seriously hurt. Others were treated and released.
President Taft urges a quick resolution of the tariff tangle as reports from the conference are due in the house tomorrow and Congress may adjourn by week’s end. He maintains hides must be absolutely free, rejecting a 7 cent concession and arguing no relief for boots shoes or leather products without free hides. He cites influences from senators and leather interests on the policy stance.
The Walkout at McKees Rocks led to clashes as deputies and state police tried to control rioting. Sheriff Gumbert planned arbitration, but Frank Hoffstot refused. Evictions occurred during the action as 5600 workers walked out.

July 26 Des Moines reports a Northwestern passenger train colliding with two Marquisville miners near East Fourth and Hayes Streets. Harry Blakely was killed instantly. Nels Danielson suffered severe, possibly fatal injuries. A track walker, George Nichols, found the victims about an hour after the 4 a.m. crash on a sharp curve near the tile works.
In Adel, farmers paused work as hundreds searched the river for a missing girl. After days of toil four young men, friends of the victim Macy, pulled the body from entangled branches of an uprooted tree that lay in the water. Hooks used as drags snagged the hair, leading to the discovery.
A large farmers picnic is set for August 19 in Dows at the race track grounds. The event is organized by the Farmers' Co operative Creamery and the Farmers' Grain and Lumber companies with Wright Des Moines and A G Dunn Mason City as principal speakers. Free coffee and buttermilk will be served and a racing matinee and other features are planned for about 5000 attendees.
