Keep blooms off annual flowers and manage seed and mulch

Extension horticulturist Ben F. Vance advises removing faded blooms to promote annuals, while seed balls on potatoes are edible but yield different varieties. Perennial phlox need ample water and summer fertilizer, with a cool mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, plus a pesticide spray every 7 to 10 days. Daffodils crowded should be dug, bulbs separated, and small ones discarded. straw mulch can cause yellowing from nitrogen deficiency, which a high nitrogen fertilizer can fix.
