Largest California forest blaze unchecked near Los Padres
One major fire remained unchecked as wildfires scorched 135000 acres and destroyed 40 homes in southern California. A 410000 acre blaze in Los Padres NF north of Los Angeles near the Ventura line was fueled by high winds. About 1000 of 4000 Angeles NF firefighters were diverted to this new blaze. Fire damage across the fires ranged from 20 to 60 million dollars with over 1.5 million spent by the Forestry Service. Two firefighters were killed and 40 others injured.

Almost Turkey Roast As Tires Catch Fire
Volunteer firemen from Crawfordsville and Ainsworth fought a front burning truck load of turkeys on highway 218. Stephen Gray of Davenport drove the truck to West Liberty for a turkey plant when dual rear tires overheated and caught fire. Firemen limited damage to the tires after extinguishing the flames three miles south of Ainsworth before 10 o clock. About 30 turkeys were recovered from the burning vehicle and transferred to another truck. The Bodie Truck Lines of West Liberty operated the vehicle.

Newton Publisher Dies At His Home Today
L O Brewer publisher of the Newton Daily News died at his residence in Newton. Brewer, 71, had led the paper since 1944 and worked with it since 1919. He was born January 25, 1889 near Vinton and graduated from Downs High School. He served as Newton Chamber of Commerce president and IA and IN daily press associations director. He was active in Kiwanis Red Cross American Legion and other local groups.
