In a deadly accident in the Loetschberg tunnel near Bern, twenty three Italian workers were killed when drilling pierced a wall to an underground lake. The accident occurred 2400 yards from the northern entrance as water from the Kander River choked the tunnel within 1000 yards of the entrance.
Trustees of Cecil Rhodes announce the next United States qualifying exam for Rhodes scholarships will be held in October 1900. Cleveland July 25 Harry E Hayes of the firm W J Hayes Son was arrested on a New Jersey warrant for conspiracy in a bond deal. About 105000 involved. Alleged he gained possession of West New York Board of Education bonds illegally and forgery occurred in the issue.
Police believe a bombing targeted Samuel Martini at his two story rear building on North Winchester Avenue in Chicago. The blast damaged the stairway, shattered windows, and sent Martini and neighboring residents into the street. Martini linked the attack to the Black Hand Society after receiving two threats demanding $600.
