Riverside parade caps centennial with two hour celebration

Riverside closes a three day centennial with a two hour parade streaming along highway 22 drawing hundreds. More than 200 entries varied from Miss Iowa Jennifer Owen on a birthday cake float to numerous clubs churches and businesses. Awards honored top floats including Wayne's Workshop Riverside second and Weimer Gerot Float third with many others receiving honorable mentions and placings in horse and walking categories.

Washington Rocket Club Plans Big Tuesday Launch

Members of the Washington Rocket Club plan a large rocket launch at 7 p.m. Tuesday from grounds on the Washington Junior High School building. Several people have expressed interest in watching the event.

Runway Buckles at Cedar Rapids Airport Closed

The main runway at Cedar Rapids municipal airport ruptured in four spots due to intense heat and humidity. Airport Manager Roy Jameson said repairs will take several days, forcing flights to use a shorter, diagonal runway during the closure.

Belmond Gas Supply Cut By Suspected Vandalism

In Belmond about 2,500 residents faced a weekend gas outage after a main valve was turned off northwest of the city. Emergency crews catered to homes as meters were shut off and neighbors were urged to keep doors closed. Gas service resumed Sunday afternoon while officials continued an investigation.

Record Heat Holds East as Western Breaks Heat Line

Record heat persists across the eastern half of the nation with 90 degree days and high humidity. New York posts its highest overnight low in 20 years at 79. Cooler air moves in north of the frontal zone from New England to the central Plains while a band of thundershowers marks the boundary. Iowa and Nebraska report the heaviest activity with strong winds hail rain and funnel clouds.

Forecast shows scattered thundershowers developing tonight mostly in the west and south. Lows near the 60s. Tuesday will be warm and humid with highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s and a chance of more thundershowers.

Iowa Guardsmen Help Rescue Flooded Little Falls

About 100 Iowa National Guardsmen en route to Camp Ripley for summer training aided flood relief in Little Falls Minnesota. They sandbagged roads, dug relief ditches, and saved at least two residents from the waters. The units included 224th Engineers Battalion and 248th Aviation Battalion, praised by Little Falls Mayor Kenneth Floyd.

Ray backs river road route in Iowa dispute resolution

Gov. Robert D Ray moves to settle a clash over a 12 mile Lee County road from Keokuk to Montrose aimed at creating a Great River Road scenic parkway along the Mississippi. He will convene Iowa Highway Commission, Mississippi Parkway Commission, and Lee County groups to resolve legality and funding questions amid a $3 million price tag and a 1969 state takeover pact.

Fischer Takes Lead In Chess World Championship

In Reykjavik Boris Spassky resigned at move 41 as Bobby Fischer won game six, pulling 32 to 24 in the world championship race. Spassky applauded by spectators after the decisive sequence. Fischer opened with an unusual queen's bishop pawn push and pressed a winning attack before 41 moves. The seventh game is set for Tuesday afternoon with Spassky White.
