Fifteen witnesses answered a subpoena at 2 a.m. outside the Criminal Courts Building in New Orleans. They left and returned 12 hours later after night court staff explained the afternoon and morning sessions had been mixed up.
Delegates from twelve Iowa first district counties will gather in Washington the week of September 7 to choose the district member of the new state board of public instruction. County Supt. Lester B. Krabill will chair the convention.
George Wilk inson reports on a 4 H tour group from Washington County in Goshen county Wyoming. The trip included a parade, cowboy hats, ranch stays about 40 miles from Torrington and notes of a grazing shift and old homestead scars.
A Mt Pleasant event invites amateur farm inventors to enter homemade devices for a chance at cash prizes. The show runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the city square, August 21, with four top gadgets awarded. Judge J C Patterson signs a district court divorce granting Marilyn Hamilton a divorce from Henry J Hamilton. The couple wed June 13 1952 and have no children. Marilyn Hart retains her maiden name.
Ottumwa man Harold G. Troxel age 23 confessed to seven burglaries that year damaging several sites by fire and stealing three cars He admitted the Haiberg Market Fulmer Builders Supply Co Blumer filling station Garretson Heating Service Co and United Food Market burglaries all on or around June 2 The fires were unintended says Troxel while police noted only small amounts were taken in each theft He was arrested Wednesday night near a wrecked car found by police and held for investigation.
In Korea near Panmunjom Allied positions faced renewed Chinese assault. Outpost Esther and two northeast outposts endured bayonet and rifle butt fighting as 1,500 Chinese troops pressed the line. Second Lt. William H. Bates, 24, Portland MO, nicknamed mayor of Esther, reported holding with about half the outpost intact and requested artillery to enclose the position as enemy neared from the rear.
Senator McCarthy confronted Walter Bedell Smith as the book burning debate flared. Smith said no government funds were spent on Communist authored books overseas since 1947 and denied authority to burn books. He noted a secret NSC project called pigeon and stated details would be provided in a closed session with Eisenhower's approval.
Regular insecticide use on cattle was said to control horn flies. Artillery from the 3rd U S Division struck the Red rear area and claimed destruction of a Chinese company about 160 men before it reached the Central Front lines.
