Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold moves to strengthen the United Nations observer presence in Lebanon after the Soviet veto blocked a plan to replace American troops with a larger UN force. He favors a council backed summit approach and will consult elder statesmen as he weighs steps.
Washington Senate Republicans welcomed President Eisenhower s call for a high level United Nations meeting on the Mideast crisis. Knowland called the proposal strong and forthright and warned against Troop withdrawal that could threaten Lebanon s independence without UN forces in place. Democratic leaders Mansfield Monroney Magnuson and Fulbright urged prompt support while Smith backed the President s reply as very to the point.
Ten Soviet students completed a five day Des Moines stay as part of a 30 day cultural exchange. They exchanged photos and gifts with host families and attended questions sessions with about 150 teachers. The group prepares to visit San Francisco and Palo Alto before returning to Washington and on to New York.
At 7 10 am today two trucks collided on a hill crest eight miles southwest of Washington causing 600 dollars of damage. A Ford truck driven by Forest Glen Brock and a 1950 International driven by Perry William Turner sustained front-end damage. no injuries were reported and Deputy Sheriff Robert Swift investigated.
In East Dubuque Illinois Gloria Hines 15 drowned when swept from a wing dam on the Mississippi River as an older boy tried to rescue her. She was with her sister Nancy 9 and brother Delbert 13 at a sandbar near the spot where a priest drowned July 20.
Lebanese lawmakers agreed to hold a presidential election July 31 as UPI reports tensions rise over the 12 week revolt. Adel Osseiran summoned 66 deputies to Beirut to choose a successor to embattled President Camille Chamoun amid U.S. military demonstrations and regional upheaval.
Eliza Fesenbeck Norton 89 died Tuesday at Pines rest home Washington. Funeral 2 p.m. Friday at Gould and Eden Brighton with Rev. Orval Hughes presiding. Born January 25 1869 in Philadelphia she lived in Brighton 40 years and had moved to the rest home a year ago. Survivors include two daughters two sons a sister a brother seven grandchildren 16 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Paris sources report Charles de Gaulle would refuse a United Nations heads of government meeting on the Middle East if held at the UN. In Moscow Izvestia hints Khrushchev might boycott a Security Council session over Nationalist China. White House says Eisenhower could attend but would walk out if used for propaganda. Hammarskjold seeks to bolster UN observer presence in Lebanon and pave for a possible summit.
Dennis Hotle of rural Keota and Margaret Stout of rural Washington represent Washington county at the state 4-H conservation camp in Madrid. They join about 100 Iowa delegates studying conservation methods this week. Margaret is daughter of Mr and Mrs Donald Stout and Dennis is son of Mr and Mrs Antone Hotle.
Mrs. Lewis A. Slaubaugh 88 died at her Wellman home Tuesday. She lived in Wellman 18 years, born November 17, 1869, to John and Mary Kempf, married Lewis A. Slaubaugh in 1899. Funeral at Wellman Mennonite Church with Rev. George Miller and Max Yoder, interment West Union cemetery. Powell Funeral Home in charge. She left a son and daughter, 18 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was predeceased by an infant daughter, four brothers and a sister.
About 350 persons gathered at Iowa Wesleyan college in Mount Pleasant for a Science Education Clinic. Attendees included teachers and future teachers from Washington and nearby towns such as Brighton Columbus Junction Hedrick Kalona West Chester Letts Ainsworth and Hedrick with names listed among the participants.
A registered Guernsey bull named Land O Canaan Bud was sold to Richard Fletcher of Wapello by Harold Rawhouse near Columbus Junction. Dam is Land O Canaan Lorene, sire Cindy's Rex of Canaan View, announced by the American Guernsey cattle club.
Fifteen American finalists compete for Miss U S A crown at the Miss Universe pageant in Long Beach California. Southern contenders led the tally as 15 finalists were named from among 4000 fans. Finalists include Illinois Louisiana Nebraska South Dakota Texas and New York entrant Virginia Fox. The winner advances to face 34 foreign contestants in the Miss Universe judging.
Government reports June consumer prices rose less than a tenth of one percent to 123.7, year over year up 2.9 percent. Labor official Ewan Clague praises balance while warning panic buying could revive inflation. Take home pay hit by living costs. food prices steady. services costs flat for first time since 1956. Escalator clauses affect about 575,000 workers with small raises in certain industries.
Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus seeks Supreme Court review of the injunction blocking interference with Central High School integration. He asks for recall of records from federal district court and the Eighth Circuit. The Justice Department prepared a brief for possible intervention as the case proceeds in St. Louis August 4.
Eunice Vail Desmond a 19 year old Milwaukee debutante will leave Aug 2 to join the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary at a Dubuque Iowa convent. She plans to complete two years of college but chose religious life now leaving society behind.
In Harrisburg Ul UpI report, Del Whitaker 17 of Millington Mich filed murder complaints against two officers Winston Gidcomb 33 and Glen Schwartz 26 after a coroner's jury ruled the 15 year old Margo Hallwood was killed by a lead fragment from a pistol fired by police during a high speed chase. The case heads to a Circuit Court grand jury in September with bond set at 5000 for each officer and both suspended.
Twenty six members attended the Washington FFA monthly meeting at the show barn. Terry Horn was elected secretary and Jerry Cline chosen sentinel. They planned a refreshment stand for the county fair and discussed fair entries and preparation days. The group swam before and had refreshments after.
