Mrs. Milne reported a rattlesnake at her back door in Vancouver B C. Police and SPCA traced the area, found ground marks, and captured a baby garter snake after a careful search.
The mid June consumer price index rose by one tenth of a percent led by food costs, leaving the index at 115.1 relative to the 1947-49 base. Commissioner Ewan Clague called the change nearly stable and too small to affect workers’ pay.

Washington ministers announce the Wings Over Jordan Negro choir will give a concert at 8 p.m. Monday August 9 in the Methodist church. The group, famed from radio, is returning to Washington as part of a goodwill personal appearance tour led by Rev. Glynn T. Settle.
A Cathay Pacific plane with 18 aboard crashed in the South China Sea near Hainan Island. At least 10 were rescued including three of six Americans. Eight survivors reached Kowloon by sea plane. three Parish family members among the Americans were listed. Some Americans' status remained uncertain as reports conflicted.

Funeral services for Mrs. Emery A. Hofer 49 will be held Tuesday July 27 at Jones funeral home with Dr. William J. Grossheim in charge Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery Mrs Hofer died in Seattle Wash after a yearlong illness She was born October 21 1904 in Washington and married Emery A. Hofer January 1 1921 in Washington Survivors include her husband her mother Mrs Mary Starr two brothers Donald and Walter and two sisters Mrs Pearl Hines and Mrs Mildred Jackson The family notes the service on a purely free will offering basis.
Averitt Russell Buckner 53 died July 12 in Warrensburg Missouri from a work related fall concussion. He lived in Washington from 1937 to 1943 while employed at American Pearl Button Co. Funeral services were July 14 in Warrensburg with burial there. Survivors include his wife a son and four sisters.
Three new members were added to the Journal’s Three Quarter Century club, joining others who signed in past years. The group, open to Washington county residents aged 75 plus, will attend the annual dinner August 14 at the Washington Golf and Country club, free of charge. New members include Mrs. Joseph A. Pacha, Martha Paulus Bickford, and Mrs. Minnie Duke, with details on their origins and family ties.
Rev Orville Lawrence Kuhn D D of Pittsburgh will be guest speaker at the local United Presbyterian church Sunday morning. He has led rural and city pastorates and currently heads the audio visual education department of the Board of Christian Education. The Kuhns and their two boys are visiting Dr and Mrs Haney.
West German security chief Otto John is believed kidnaped by Red agents and taken into East Berlin. U S officials fear he may reveal counter-espionage secrets from his recent Washington talks with CIA chief Allen Dulles. A Cabinet meeting was planned to discuss the case as Western secret agents in the Soviet Zone face arrests.
Dr J G Widmer and Wayland ministers organize a blood typing event at Wayland Mennonite church on August 2 at 8 pm to catalog blood types for future donor needs. Participants aged 16 to 55 in good health are invited, with a $1 typing fee to cover services.
Victor Lively 32 was arrested by St Louis County deputies while hitchhiking on Route 66 west of St. Louis. He matched the description of the Indianapolis killer known as Jack O'Shea who left 18 year old Dorothy Poore's body in a Claypool Hotel room. Lively was armed with a .32 revolver.
National Guard troops seized control of Phenix City Alabama after ousting local law enforcement and disarming residents. Gov Gordon Persons declared martial rule, aiming to end fear after the June 18 assassination of Albert L Patterson and to curb ongoing crime and intimidation.
