YW Camp Fire Camp to Open at Lake Darling

The annual YWCA Camp Fire Girls camp will run July 25 to 41 at Lake Darling with about 90 girls aged 8 through 14. Directed by Mrs. Ray Hendrickson of Kalona, the event features cabin mothers, junior counselors, a camp nurse, lifeguard, and a Hawaiian craft program culminating in a luau with a roast pig.

Washington County 4-H educational presentation results

Wednesday’s judging at the Washington YMCA crowned winners in junior and blue ribbon categories across divisions for girls and boys. Notable names include Marty Sojka Jackson Boys Club, Paul Reed Franklin Cubs, Jerome Wittetoe Washington Hustlers, Bill Vincent Dutch Creek Flyers, Matt Sojka Jackson Boys, Jeff Boshart Washington Hustlers, and Harry Walker. Tax exemption index would rise with inflation in 1974

Representative Les Aspin introduced a House bill to add a cost-of-living adjustment to personal income tax exemptions starting in 1974. The plan links increases to annual inflation, so a 5 percent rise in 1974 would raise the $750 exemption to $787.50 and adjust each year thereafter to reflect inflation.

Iowa weighs dropping state meat inspection to the federal level

Agriculture Secretary L B Liddy announced serious consideration of returning all meat inspection to the USDA. Iowa inspects about 550 small plants, with federal funds split 50 50 and concerns over funding, location of inspectors, and efficiency drive the move. Minnesota and North Dakota have already shifted to federal oversight.

Kiwanis Honors Scholarship Winners for 1971

Since 1961 the club has awarded over $12,000 to support students and American Field Service. Eleven U S Soldiers Killed in Week of Low Vietnam War Toll

Iowa Weather: Variable Clouds and Showers Through Friday

United Press International reports Iowa will see variable cloudiness with showers and thunderstorms into Friday. A chance of locally heavy storms exists in the east and south tonight. Cooler air moves in across the north and west Friday with highs in the 80s and tonight’s lows in the 60s north and 65 to 70 south.
