Mrs Frat Perry aged 76 of Eldon suffered a four scalp wound and other injuries when a perch fell on her as she started down the steps. She was taken to Ottumwa hospital where her condition was listed as fair.
Unofficial 1940 census figures show Iowa total 2 635 174, up 64 163 from 1930. Forty one of ninety nine counties declined while Polk County rose from 152 837 to 195 389, and Jefferson also fell though Washington increased.
Paul B. Wee mueller of Shenandoah, son of Mr and Mrs Gottloib Wegmueller, is to graduate from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago on August 1 and expects to begin service in the Amazon valley in Brazil.
Raymond Liebert, 33, a farmer from three miles north of Dunkerton, is in serious condition at St. Francis hospital after a wagon fall. He is semi conscious and paralyzed from the waist down.
Kenneth Tuller of Ottumwa returned to Ottumwa hospital after announcing the birth of a boy to learn his wife had another baby boy born while he was away. The second child appeared unexpectedly Sunday, making him a father for the second time.
The University of Iowa pediatrics department reports a 14 year study under Dr. P. C. Jeans showing that proper diet reduces tooth decay to negligible levels and can halt existing decay within months when diet is improved.
In Montana a second attempt set a livestock pass on fire just hours before a fatal strike. Lawrence Hain, 48, a highway department flagman from Whitehall and a native of Sheldon, died when Mehmning struck the pass near Butte.
Ruth Williamson, 12, of Williamson nearly drowned while trying to save her sister Carol, 11. Lifeguard Wilber Adair pulled both girls from deep water at the Decatur County pool and artificial respiration was administered. They are daughters of Mr. and Mrs. George W Williamson.
Mrs. H. F. Stewart, 88, died at 1 PM at her residence 608 West Washington street. Survived by son Fred L. Stewart and daughters Mrs. Belle F. Montgomery, William G. Stewart, and Miss Helen Stewart, all of Washington.
MOE ANNENBERG ON WAY TO U.S. PRISON. Philadelphia publisher surrenders to federal authorities in Chicago to begin a three year term for income tax evasion. He is moved to Lewisburg Pennsylvania, with a night at a Michigan prison farm en route, to avoid press disruption.
A large audience attended the union service in Central Park to conclude the summer series. Rev. William M. Nichols preached on three “cheers” of forgiveness companionship and victory based on Christ's statements. Local ministers assisted and a brass quartet provided music.
Mrs Rh M Hamilton aged 92 died at her Keota home. Funeral at Keota Federated church Tuesday at 2 30, burial in Keota cemetery. She was born Sarah Josephine Cabeen in Ohio on Feb 17 1848, married R M Hamilton Jan 4 1870, widow since 1912, survived by four daughters and five sons, longtime United Presbyterian member.
Mrs Cora Wright Bartlett died Saturday at 2 30 am in her Washington Pennsylvania home after a two year illness. A former teacher in Washington Elementary, she was 69 born December 22 in Jackson township and educated at Washington Academy and Des Moines High Lang Park Normal. Survived by husband Clarke Bartlett two brothers and three sisters plus many nieces and nephews. Funeral and burial to be held in Washington.
Mr and Mrs Herb Malcolm former Tama county residents own a home and acreage at Arvada Colorado. The property was left to the Malcolms by a couple who are now deceased, for whom they had performed many deeds of kindness and service.
Des Moines July report notes Wendell Willkie's frank, relaxed manner with reporters during a Colorado Springs stop. Observers say he appears serious, approachable, and focused on the nomination and its responsibilities, while friends describe humbling effects from the campaign pace.
William C. Bullitt ambassador to France told reporters in Hyde Park that there is no question of recognizing the Petain government as the regime already maintains diplomatic intercourse with the United States. He arrived from Washington after resuming conferences with President Roosevelt.

A party of 115 Washington men traveled by special Burlington train to St Louis and back, enjoying mild midsummer weather and two baseball games as the Dodgers beat the Cards 3 1 and 5 2. The trip, coordinated by C. F. Anderson and Burlington staff, used three coaches and a stripped diner with comfortable seating and cooling. This marks the second year of such outings, following a Rock Island trip to Chicago last year. A Journal note from “L. B.” recounts the serenade rumor as the bell rang through southeast of town.
Continued warm conditions with forecasts of higher temperatures. Readings showed 96 at 1 pm, with Saturday and Sunday reaching 97. Last Friday's 100 degrees remained the peak so far this summer unless today surpasses it. Overnight low was 69.

Vice President John N. Garner questioned Roosevelt's delay in stating his third term intentions at the national convention. He said he would attend the Texas primary in Uvalde on Saturday and would decide on returning to Washington later. Garner, who has avoided reporters for weeks, made his remarks in Washington. Meanwhile in Colorado Springs Wendell Willkie released news that Lewis Douglas and John W. Hanes are organizing an independent movement to back his candidacy.

Funeral services were held at Marsh funeral home in Keota for Mrs Marion Crawford 23 with burial in Bethel Cemetery. She died Friday noon at University hospital Iowa City after a three months illness due to a heart ailment. Survived by husband daughter Margaret Ann and mother Mrs Stella Smith.
Iowa fugitive Ivan Sullivan aged 28 will be sent to Fort Madison for prosecution on a murder charge. FBI headquarters said Sullivan and Lowell Haenze, two of three escapees from the Iowa prison in June, were captured Saturday.
London July 22 Britons were urged to maintain high armament factory output to finish the war swiftly. Ernest Bevin emphasized unity among workers soldiers and airmen to prove that Britain can work and fight cheerfully. Halifax and Churchill were also preparing radio statements as German raids continued.
President Roosevelt asked Congress to provide the export-import bank with an additional 500 million dollars in capital and lending authority. The request aims to aid the 20 American republics facing economic strain from the European war as hemispheric leaders meet in Havana to discuss cooperation.
Last week two suspects were arrested following a bank robbery in Diller Nebr that ended in a fatal prison guard shooting. Haenze is being held at a Nebraska prison temporarily.
Des Moines reported preparations for a second surplus corn crop this fall. O D Klein of the agricultural conservation committee said county committees should lease space for steel bins soon to avoid last year’s rush. About 4600 empty steel bins exist statewide with more likely needed. Farmers urged to build cribs and store surplus on farms as the ever normal granary program may become permanent policy. Concrete foundations and firm anchoring on well drained ground advised. Contracts for hauling and erection to be let after competitive bids.
