DES MOINES The Iowa board of railroad commissioners grants a petition of rail carriers to make effective the same emergency increases in freight rates intrastate as the interstate commission allowed earlier, with exceptions. The order is effective until December 1, 1936 and applies to carload quantities of commerce only.
DES MOINES The Directors Mutual Insurance association of Des Moines has been granted a certificate to transact business in Iowa by the state insurance department. The company is organized to write fire and automobile insurance risks for members of the Iowa Funeral Directors Embalmers association.

Delegates from eleven counties in Iowa's first district gathered at the county court house to back one of four men for the Senate nomination after the death of Senator Louis Murphy. Martin Hicklin and Frailey attended. Elijah was absent but expected to join. The plan: meet again, choose a single candidate, then unite district support at the state convention in Des Moines Saturday. About 200 delegates heard Walker D. Hanna preside and felt hopeful of a strong district vote if a first district man is to be nominated.
Firemen were summoned yesterday evening to the Preston Wolf residence on East Polk Street where rubbish sparked a blaze that threatened to spread. Crews left after containment, but kept equipment on standby as a precaution.
Miss Jane Lady, county welfare worker, said 49 persons applied for relief in the county in the first 20 days of the month. Only 20 were accepted. Of the 49, 17 were farm hands. Charlies D Reed, federal meteorologist for Iowa, estimates today that Iowa corn yield has fallen by 100 to 140 million bushels since last Wednesday. Dean Harland Mead of Washington junior college announced that the same proportion of NYA funds allotted to the local school last year will be provided next year. Sharley Clark sells his East Main Street residence to Major Leslie T. Saul a retired army officer from Cedar Rapids.
