Corn crop shows drought stress across corn belt states
The USDA crop weather report for the week ending July 18 finds the 1976 corn crop in good national condition but with increased drought stress in north central states. Iowa saw heat stress and needed moisture, while Nebraska faced non irrigated stress and Wisconsin suffered permanent damage on light soils. Wheat harvest moved ahead, spring wheat ripened early, and NAWG urged voluntary 1977 acreage cuts amid looming wheat carryover. Cotton improved, pastures deteriorated in the Dakotas, Iowa, Wisconsin, and California, soybeans were fair to good in the western belt, and sorghum remained behind last year but in fair to good condition.

Needed rain falls In Washington area amid showers
Heavy showers brought smiles to farmers and city residents in the Washington area on Tuesday evening as observers reported 1.81 inches of rain before 7 am. Most rain came in a hard shower early Tuesday evening with overcast skies lingering this morning. Last week northern parts got about an inch, but this was the first good rain in some time.

Display of Antique Tractors at Washington County Fair
More than 25 antique tractors and farm machines will be shown in the old show barn at the Washington County fairgrounds next week with items including a Sampson and a Rock Island tractor. Brighton families host Japan youths
