At the Washington County Fair three new rides join 11 attractions for all ages with Gorham United Shows on the midway July 31 to August 3. New rides are umbrella motorcycle, swinging gym and umbrella multiple car, with other 1972 midway rides listed.
A million dollar blaze gutted the Lago Llanquihue in the Jacksonville shipyard area. Firefighters fought the four hour fire with no injuries reported as crew and two shipyard pipefitters were rescued from the damaged crew quarters. The deckhouse including galley and radio room sustained extensive damage.
Over 200 fans filled Washington High School Auditorium Thursday for SCAD's A Midsummer Night's Dream. The production runs two more nights at 8:00 p.m. with tickets at the door for $1 each. The young cast received a standing ovation and praise from attendees.
A U.S. District Court hearing in Des Moines will decide if Rock Island Lines may abandon a 63 mile eastern Iowa branch from Montezuma to Hills. An environmental impact study is now required before any abandonment, possibly delaying action up to 150 days.
Two Jesup teens, Janet Delagardelle aged 13 and her 16 year old cousin Kathy, found 3200 dollars torn into quarters near a creek two miles east of Gilbertville. An additional 1200 dollars was later recovered. Authorities say the money is real and not counterfeit and are investigating with the FBI and state police to locate its origin. An amount is still missing and no robberies have been reported in months.
The Senate narrowly approved a plan to raise the minimum wage to 2.20 over 26 months, expanding coverage to 7.4 million workers and boosting pay for 6.1 million. McGovern voted on the final split, with Agnew absent. The bill faces House reconciliation before a presidential signature.
United Press International reports a chance of a few thunderstorms in extreme northwest and north central Iowa tonight with lows in the upper 60s to 70s elsewhere. Partly cloudy in the northwest Saturday with continued thunderstorm threat. Southeast areas stay mostly sunny and hot with highs from the 80s to 90s.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 0.2 percent CPI increase in June, versus 0.3 percent in May. Food prices surged 0.6 percent led by meat up 1.3 percent and fruit and vegetables up 2.7 percent, while eggs cereals dairy and textiles fell. Nonfood commodities unchanged after seasonal adjustment. used cars rose 3.1 percent and homes climbed, with clothing gasoline and furniture easing. The 12 month CPI at 2.9 percent marks the first sub 3 percent rise in over four years.
Cedar Rapids police arrest Arron Doolin 21 on murder and robbery with aggravation charges and Joseph Love on robbery with aggravation after Deputy U.S. Marshal Dick McKinney was shot on the southeast side early Thursday morning. McKinney died at Mercy Hospital after being found slumped over the steering wheel.
State liquor sales rose to 77.9 million for the year ending June 30, up from 74.6 million previously. Iowa City led all stores with 2.28 million in sales after a self service conversion, while Cedar Rapids posted the largest year rise. Twenty stores exceeded 1 million, and self service expands to 42 stores by January 1 with new cash registers and labeling machines to speed service.
Washington reports the US economy expanded at a prodigious rate in the second quarter with a 8.9 percent real growth, while inflation rose 2.1 percent. GNP climbed to 1.139 trillion dollars, consumers spent more as savings declined, with forecasts for continued rapid growth in the second half of the year.
