Crawfordsville Lions Host Large Crowd at Pony Show

Linda Lowe was crowned Miss Crawfordsville 1962 after a beauty contest held with the eighth annual Lions Club Pony Show in Crawfordsville. First runner up was Donna Woods with Beth Wells as second runner-up among six Crawfordsville contestants. A crowd of 300 to 600 attended as the event moved to the high school field due to rain.

Marsha Holmes Named To District Office By Young Republicans

Crawfords ville youth Marsha Holmes named vice chair of the first district Young Republicans at Des Moines. She is a Washington County junior delegate to the state Republican convention and a former Washington High School student active in the band. She will attend high school in the new WACO district at Olds next year. Other county junior delegates include Betty Peters Phyllis McDowell Dennis Day Dave Everetts Julie Young Craig Waddell and Joe Jones.

Red Cross Plans Annual Meeting in Washington County

The Washington County American Red Cross chapter will hold its annual meeting Monday at 8 p.m. in the courthouse court room. Chapter chairman Dwight Bode urges all members officers and service chairmen to attend as reports on activities are heard and directors elected. Those who joined during the county-wide drive or through the Washington Community Chest are eligible to participate.

Mid-Prairie Budget Hearing Set for Kalona July 30

The Mid-Prairie Community School District will hold a public hearing on its 1962-63 budget at Kalona on July 30 at 8 p.m. The proposed budget totals 999 358 with 509 358 to be raised by taxation and a millage rate of 49. The increase reflects new high school construction additions and staff expansions.

Hearing on Local School Budget in Washington District

Directors of the Washington Community School District hold a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. August 8 at the old junior high to discuss the 1962-63 budget. Expenditures are estimated at 1 041 985, a decrease from 1 270 607 last year due to schoolhouse fund cuts, while general fund spending rises. The estimated millage is 40.625, up from 37.928, with 22 mills for the schoolhouse fund for future expansion. There are about 2,000 school age residents, and local costs per pupil compare favorably with other districts.

Seven Are Killed In Head-On Crash Near Shawano

Three couples and a neighbor die in a pre dawn head on collision on a hill southwest of Shawano Wisconsin. The Mehlberg car carrying the couples headed north and Pingel in the south bound car. Weather clear road dry and no witnesses reported.

Richland Minister Injured in Accident

The Rev. Frederic Harris of Richland was injured when his 1962 car flipped on Youth Center road near Lake Darling at 7 50 a m He was not thought seriously hurt but was taken to Fairfield hospital for head injuries and examination by sheriff investigators who cited loose gravel as the cause.

GOP Platform Calls for Liquor Law Review and Tax Relief

The Iowa Republican convention approved a platform urging a re examination of liquor laws and immediate long term property tax relief. The platform also backs annual legislative sessions increased school aid Shaff reapportionment and Kerr Mills funding for elderly care. George Nagle was re elected state party chairman and Irene Laverty as vice chair.

Ice Cube Catch World Record Claims From Two Towns

In Terre Haute Indiana John Kelly and Bob Neville both 18 claimed a world record for playing catch with an ice cube before it melted completing 4 332 exchanges. In Effingham Illinois John Klosterman 13 and Mike Cordis 11 said they tossed a standard sized ice cube 4 001 times before it melted.

Mt Pleasant Man Drowned After Boat Plunge in Skunk River

Jack Burden, 28, drowned in the Skunk River near Mount Pleasant after a gyrating ducking boat with two brothers drifted into a whirlpool by the Oakland Mulls dam. The motor stopped and Burden was thrown from the craft.

United Press International reports a weather outlook showing partly cloudy skies with scattered showers or thunderstorms through Sunday. Thunderstorms may be severe this afternoon with hail and damaging winds, especially in the extreme southwest, then turning cooler in the northwest Sunday. Tonight low 60s. Sunday highs 75 to 80 in the northwest and around 80 elsewhere, with Monday partly cloudy and slightly cooler.
