Seventeen young women from the Near and Far East arrive Monday at Iowa State College for a home economics workshop as part of the International Farm Youth Exchange. The first group includes 13 from India, two from Burma, one from Iran and one from Lebanon.
President Eisenhower, convalescent from intestinal surgery, flies non stop from Washington to Panama City for a two day conference with American heads of state. The event, largest of its kind in the Americas, opens upon arrival and was postponed from June due to the President’s operation.
Dr. Kyle a physician for over 52 years trained at Northwestern Medical College graduated June 15 1904 born August 9 1877 raised on a Washington County farm. He practiced in Diagonal Shannon City and later Washington and served as county coroner since 1932 and as secretary treasurer of the County Medical Society since 1934. The Kyle family includes four children and 11 grandchildren with ties to Kalamazoo Mt Pleasant and California.
Iowa records 15 highway deaths in a 48 hour period as 7 people perish Friday bringing the two day total to 15 and the statewide toll to 349 surpassing last year. LeRoy R. Peterson 48 Tama and Mrs Glenn I Nicholson 25 Marion died in a two car crash on U S 30 west of Toledo. Nicholson's son Mark was hospitalized in fair condition. A National Guard car crash near Colesburg killed Mrs Kollman 70 and David Stogner 36 of Decatur. Kollman and Henry Leisure 32 were injured.
Dr. C. A. Boice a native of Ainsworth has practiced in Washington since 1900. He joined the Iowa State Medical Society in 1901 and the American Medical Association, serving in leadership roles and publishing extensively. He helped establish the county hospital, health and maternity units, and contributed to medical history works. His two sons are physicians in California and Illinois.
Cloudbursts caused flash floods in Nevada and Pennsylvania. Near Reno three people were missing after their car was swept into a ravine.Mrs Matt Wachowicz and two children aged 3 and 5 were unaccounted for while her husband and a 10 year old son survived. Four other people in two cars were treated for minor injuries as floodwaters rose then receded in Galena Creek. Floods caused thousands of dollars in Reno damages with no injuries reported in the city and overflow continued in Pennsylvania.
Charles W. McLaughlin born 1870 in West Chester trained at Monmouth College and Iowa Medical College. He practiced in Crawfordsville then Washington from 1903 and delivered about four thousand babies. He and wife Bessie Hamilton married 1897. she died 1954. Their son Charles W. McLaughlin Jr. is a University of Nebraska surgeon.
Springfield police report former State Auditor Orville E. Hodge charged with embezzling 650000 in a state check scandal. State’s Atty. George P. Coutrakon also filed conspiracy complaints against Edward A. Epping and Edward A. Hintz. Warrants issued. Hodge reportedly left town.
Cassius M. Crossett of 718 South Fourth Avenue Washington died at 5 a.m. today. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. Monday July 23 at Jones Funeral Home. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. He was born September 2, 1872 in Iowa County and moved to Washington County in 1844, long residence in Wellman.
Funeral services for Albert Della Penna a farmer near Letts will be held at 2 p m Monday in the Pleasant Grove Church of God with burial in Indian Creek Cemetery. The Rev Burris P Moore will preside and arrangements are with Stacy Funeral Home Columbus Junction.
Moscow reports say the Soviet Union will not finance or assist in the Aswan High Dam project. Diplomatic circles cite commitments in China and other nations as limiting Soviet funds and capacity. Britain withdrew a $14 million offer and the United States scaled back loan plans, leaving Egypt to pursue options without conditions. Egypt's Al Gumburia claimed the dam would be built with no strings, while foreign presses note Russia’s offer of about $200 million would be unlikely to be accepted.
The McKeon court martial paused for a half day as chief defense counsel Emile Zola Berman left on a mysterious trip. Berman has urged witnesses and public attention, framing McKeon as a victim of Marine training. The case involves manslaughter and disobeying orders tied to a deadly march of Platoon 71 at Ribbon Creek.
Tom Morrison of Washington was elected district junior delegate chairman at a special district caucus held Friday morning at the state Republican convention. Ruth Augustine of Washington was elected to the credentials committee and invited to sit with the state convention credentials panel. Other officers were chosen from the counties of the first district as delegates attended from every county at Des Moines.
Zora May Fountain Parcel 68 of Richland died at University Hospital Iowa City at 3 a.m. after a month as patient. Funeral set at Richland Friends Church with Rev. Esther Figgins officiating. Burial in Friends Cemetery Gould Funeral Home in charge. Survivors include daughter Mrs Lloyd Elmore Richland son Warren Parcel Ankeny eight grandchildren nine great grandchildren and brother Albert Fountain Ottumwa.

John Williams, former resident of Columbus Junction, died at 5 a.m. today at Hershey Hospital in Muscatine. The body is at Stephens Funeral Home in Columbus Junction, pending funeral arrangements. He was the son of Vincent and Frances Williams and survived by brothers Charles of Columbus Junction and Chester of Florida.
