Mrs Phyllis McCarthy age 38 told a doctor she had nerves. Dr Joseph Salerno examined her and sent for an ambulance. Before it arrived she gave birth to her fifth child, a boy, saying she never dreamed she would have one.
Washington officials present the 1954 budget calling for 26.70 per 1 000 assessed value in taxes, up from last year. A public hearing is set for August 2 at city hall, as the plan projects expenditures of 326 275 with 126 525 from taxation and 199 750 from other sources. The biggest proposed increase targets street improvements rising to 55 000, due to an exhausted street fund and imminent seal coats.

Mrs. Iva Gilbertson mother of Mrs. Melvin Hill of Washington died Monday at Manly Iowa after a long illness. Mr and Mrs Hill were called Sunday. Funeral services will be held there Wednesday afternoon. No Unite Presbyterian choir practice this week due to her death. the choir will sing Sunday as usual and music lessons at the high school on Wednesday are cancelled.
A 28 year old farm wife in Knox City Texas advertised in the Wichita Falls Record News offering to sell an eye to provide security for her family. Frank Benbow a retired Wichita man said he would gamble cash for a chance at normal sight after discussing with his doctor.
Washington President Eisenhower nominated Franklin G. Floete of Des Moines Iowa and Dr Melvin A Casberg of St Louis Mo to be assistant secretaries of defense Floete 64 would head properties and installations upon Senate confirmation Casberg 44 has served as assistant to the defense secretary in charge of health and medical activities
A congressional conference committee split the difference between House and Senate bills and approved 440 000 600 for flood control and rivers and harbors work. The Army Engineers would spend the funds in the fiscal year ending July 30 with 278 670 000 earmarked for Water and Power projects nationwide.
A wind and rain storm struck two wards of Boone Tuesday night causing downed power lines and damaged property. Reuben Lippert, a Boone contractor, was injured clearing fallen limbs from his roof. Mrs. Russell Blumeyer of Dows and Roger Peter son of near Madrid were hurt in a car collision amid the storm.
Front line fighting in Korea produced two failed Communist assaults as truce planners sought a stable cease fire line. A Chinese battalion attacked near Lookout Mountain at the Kum Song Pukhan river junction but was repulsed after hours of heavy fighting. Two Red companies crossed the Kumsong and struck a South Korean position on the south bank, then were driven back.
St James parish plans an open house August 2 to inspect their remodeled rectory with volunteer parish workers highlighted. New circle leaders and retiring leaders will host, serving refreshments from 2 to 5 p.m. August 19 is set for a summer social chaired by Mrs Hines with co chair Mrs Heck.

Donors are told not to eat fat or protein four hours before giving. allowed foods include fruit juice tea coffee toast jelly or honey.
