The House approved the anti-poll tax measure 290 to 112 despite a strong southern opposition. The bill would ban voting conditioned on poll taxes and now moves to the Senate, where passage is unlikely this session.
Cool July night sees temperature dip to 50 degrees while daytime high reached 85. Weather record notes an unusually low July reading.
A senate appropriations subcommittee recommended 8438,204,000 for rivers and flood-control projects this year. Spurred by President Truman, the panel also approved 109,400,000 for flood control in the Mississippi basin, more than doubling the house general flood control appropriation and nearly tripling rivers and harbors funds.

Martha Wilson Mount widow of William R. Mount died Sunday at her daughter Mrs. E C Eicher’s home in Washington after a long life rooted in the community. Born August 39 1852 in the Mount brick home 716 South Town avenue she was the oldest of six children and a descendant of early settlers. Survived by one son Homer and one daughter Mrs Edward Eicher with grandchildren and great grandchildren, she was active in the Three-Quarter Century club DAR and Pythian Circle. Funeral at L A Jones on Tuesday with burial in Woodlawn cemetery.
Dick Bidwell 77 former Washington city street department employee died at 6 50 am at his home 413 West Seventh street from a heart attack after a lengthy illness. Funeral services are set for 2 30 pm Wednesday at Sherman's funeral home with Rev Paul K Wells of the Baptist church officiating. Burial at Hillcrest cemetery Brighton. Born in Brighton February 25 1870 he spent his life in Washington county. Survived by his wife and numerous nephews and nieces including Dale Bidwell Chicago Kenneth Bidwell Wyoming Leona Engel Talleyrand Gladys Cook Monmouth Ray McClintie California Martha Four Wapello Dorothy Menefee Muscatine and a stepson.
Five Iowans died over the weekend in accidents involving two auto crashes and three drownings. James Kelley, 34, of Town City, and Mrs. Iaal Staebler, about 44, were killed in traffic incidents near Cedar Rapids and Floyd respectively. A 17 month old Waterloo girl drowned in an unfinished cesspool, and two men drowned in river incidents.
Harold Savage of Washington fined $10 plus costs for shooting a green heron at the reservoir. State conservation officer described the bird as unusual for the area and illegal to shoot. The case was heard by Justice of the Peace BK D Ray.
Earl Cooley of Keota dies leaving a stepson Earl Humble wife Martha Bruney survives him. He previously married Emma Cooley who died in 1985 and later married Martha Bruney on April 19 1987. Darlene Blinn is named as a step grandchild.
The U S soil conservation service reports crop damage and soil loss in Iowa Missouri and Illinois from floods and storms in May and June totaling 900 million dollars over 38 days. Upland damage reaches 885 million, flood plain losses 217 million, with soil loss over 491 million tons and 186 million tons from erosion.

Batavia July 21 The Dutch army announced it had opened warfare against the Indonesian republic with destructive sweeps by American made Mustang fighters and heavy ground fighting reported. Sukarno appealed for United Nations intervention to halt the Dutch attack. Dutch airmen reportedly attacked strong points and fighters, a Japanese-type republican plane was shot down at Kalidjati, and targets near Serang were hit.
A four motor Argentine army transport plowed into spectators at Palomar base while attempting takeoff for an air force demonstration. More than 30 aboard and in the crowd were believed killed as the ship burst into flames and the show was canceled. exact casualty figures were unavailable.
