Waterloo district judge A B Lovejoy denied Mildred Todd Kinney's petition to recover her adopted daughter Patricia Ann Kinney a 3 year old committed to the Davenport state orphans home. Kinney alleged fraud and duress invalidated her signature authorizing the commitment.
Frank Mennen of Burlington was digging potatoes when his spade hit a metallic object. He uncovered a dollar watch, aged twenty five years or more, which began running as soon as dirt was brushed away and continued to run for hours.
Bettendorf resident Mrs. Alfonso Navarro married her dying lover two hours before he died from injuries after a crane struck him at the Bettendorf foundry. Navarro, 42, faced the tragedy as his spouse offered solace amid loss.
Glenn Frank, former editor of a national magazine and president of the University of Wisconsin, will close the University of Iowa summer lecture series this weekend. He speaks Friday evening and presides at a Saturday morning round table. Frank is the sixth leading contemporary thinker to visit the university this summer.

She was a member of the Eastern Star and Women’s Relief Corps.

Dr E M McConaughy aged 69 died at his home 607 West Main Street after years of ill health. Funeral set for Saturday at 10 a m in Sherman funeral home with Rev F W Eastwood presiding and Elm Grove Cemetery burial. He born May 23 1869 near Morning Sun son of Margaret Scott and Samuel P McConaughy. He grew up in Washington and trained as a dentist at Temple University before practicing here until 1928. Surviving: wife Marie Fulton. son William. daughters Mary, Cathryn, and Mrs Ward Chandler. sister Mrs W T K Thompson.
County official Lester B Kra announces teachers examinations at the courthouse on August 3 4 and 5. The tests offer a path to uniform county certificates and help high school normal training students who did not pass or want to raise grades.

Judge James P. Gaffney of Williamsburg Iowa county won the Democratic nomination on the fifth ballot to run for Congress, succeeding Edward C. Eicher. He secured 253 votes in a unanimous roll call after steady gains through ballots from Hart and McKinnon, with Johnson county delegates tipping the result.
Washington county’s delegation at the district democratic convention shows strong backing for Will Hart of Iowa City on the first two ballots. A later third ballot reveals a tilt with Hart at 134% to Gaffney and McKinnon, while the fifth ballot swings Washington to Gaffney making the choice unanimous.
In a Iowa convention Cedar county divided between Gaffney and McKinnon with Des Moines backing Conrad. Henry and Iowa pledged votes to McKinnon while Van Buren and Jefferson show mixed support. The roll call noted 127 votes needed for nomination. Stapleton sought withdrawal after results. Dr. O F Boller presided as convention opened.
