Trading was suspended today on the Chicago Board of Trade after the worst price depressing session in history. Directors met late into the night and voted to close for a brief holiday to rest overworked employees. Wheat and other grains fell sharply across four sessions.
Des Moines reports June construction awards totaling 104,255,400, up from May 77,171,700. Private work led with 74,334,400 on residential 27,755,200 and non residential 24,400. Public works and utilities reached 24,437,800, while last year’s June figures were substantially lower.
The July report notes domestic hog prices fell since mid May due to ample slaughter and heat while foreign hog product prices stayed steady or rose, aided by a weaker dollar. Funeral services for 71 year old Mrs. Robert J. Rowan will be held at 2 PM Saturday at the farm home southeast of Ainsworth. Born Anetta Hofsteader near Ainsworth she lived there all her life. She married in 1881 and is survived by husband and daughter Mrs. Karl Meglesen of Montrose Iowa.
President Roosevelt urges U S employers to raise wages and shorten hours to 40 hours with a $1 minimum and clerical workers at least one dollar weekly, plus a 35 hour week and 40 cent minimum for others. An emergency reemployment drive and blanket code are proposed to accelerate industrial recovery before codes are approved. Post offices will distribute forms to about five million employers by July 27.
Henry county wheat growers likely receive about 30000 dollars over three years under a new government program if farm rentals stay at 30 cents a bushel. County Farm Bureau agent Len Beath outlined plans for township unit organization, noting estimates assume all farmers join the contract. He added Henry county averages 18 5 bushels per acre and 66143 bushels a year, with 721 acres reallocated.
The Iowa quarrying industry including rock crushing and cement manufacture showed progress in preventing accidents in 1932. Russel Frink maintenance engineer for five southeastern Iowa counties announces a personnel change effective August first. Three tramps riding Milwaukee freight No. 86 perished when an oil car derailed and exploded at Gladwin. Twenty five oil tank cars ignited a blaze that destroyed the Milwaukee station and W N Allenworth store, with J A Harbison’s shop saved. Conductor Ek Buckman burned but not seriously. forty one cars forward and the engine survived.
Smoke towers and flames rose high after an explosion near the town. Wires to Milwaukee station in Washington were down, leaving little direct news of the blaze.
Central Iowa corn fields benefited last night from heavy rains in places aiding crop development. Not all areas saw rain and many sections of the state still need showers, according to federal meteorologist Charles L. Reed.
Lightning sparked a blaze at the Farmers Cooperative Elevator and Livestock Company in Boone destroying two elevators. More than 7,500 bushels of grain were ruined and boiler and other machinery burned. Firemen fought the flames for five hours. the loss is not yet estimated but partially insured.
