A Friday Fourth of July heat wave pushed Iowa temperatures above 100 degrees in central and southwest regions. Council Bluffs reached 107 degrees, the hottest since August 2, 1964, while Des Moines and Audubon hit 104 and Sioux City 108. Northeastern Iowa saw clouds moderating heat. a late night band of thundershowers moved south from Minnesota with gusty winds and hail.

Washington firemen detect smoke from lightning strike in home
Firemen answered a call at Delbert Earls residence on East 15th Street. No fire found, but smoke remained and a window was struck by lightning during a sharp electrical storm that left .26 inches of rain. The storm and muted skies preceded Army National Guard news from Camp McCoy where the 164th medical company earned a Superior unit Award. Guardsmen honored included 25-year veterans Spec. 7 Delbert W. Brock and First Sgt. Owen W. White of Ainsworth, among others from Iowa units.

Keota Appoints Bob Beck as New Mayor
Bob Beck, Keota cafe co owner and former Keota Eagle co publisher, was appointed mayor at the regular town council meeting replacing resigning Frank Caraccio. Beck recently returned from California after six years away. On Sunday motorists must move cars from curbside around the square by 12 30 p m for a Shriners pre circus parade. Decatur blast devastates rail yard injuring 127
A liquified petroleum tank car exploded in a Decatur rail yard causing a major fire and total destruction of the block-long facility. Up to 30 000 residents were evacuated as 129 people sought treatment in local hospitals and a National Guard unit was called in to assist.

Nelle Long Set to Mark 100th Birthday July 24
Nelle Swank Long, a Richland native born July 24, 1874, will observe her 100th birthday next Wednesday at the Washington Care Center with an open house from 2 to 3 p.m. She credits longevity to staying active, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and a life centered in church and community service. She helped raise stepsons, worked 30 years making dresses, and remains mentally sharp with hobbies in knitting, crocheting, reading, and oil painting. A Keota dinner will honor her this Sunday, with nieces and nephews from Canada expected to attend.

Pella Closes Car Washes and Laundries in Water Cutback
