United Nations team heads for Kaesong for cease-fire discussions amid Communist demands for UN troop withdrawal. Rain delayed travel but three amphibious ducks standby as Adm. Joy leads talks backed by Secretary Acheson who warned the truce could fail if demands persist.
Chamber of Commerce leaders discussed a proposed Western Union service change for Washington aiming at a commission-based status. The company may file a complaint with the FCC within the month, with the decision resting with the agency. Mr and Mrs Garry W Ramsever returned from St Louis after attending the National Baby Chick Convention.
Police announced the break up of a $1,000,000 narcotics ring that supplied drugs to about 1,000 addicts including many high school students. Eldred Wadlington Jr. was arrested as the distributor after an anonymous call alerted authorities. Three men and two women were seized in rapid arrests within 36 hours.
A picnic for Iowa State alumni and families takes place Sunday at 6 PM in the Sunset Park porch garden. Prospective Iowa State College students invited. Attendees should bring own table service and dishes to pass. ice cream will be served. Dr. M R Flickinger chairs the program. J C Holbert of Washington will speak briefly and Guiseppe Bevicioso of Anlan will attend alongside group singing and visiting.
John Harris Lyman 79 formerly of Garner Iowa died this morning at the United Presbyterian Home He and his wife were the first residents when the home opened four years ago He had been bedfast for months Funeral services set for 7 30 p m Saturday at Sherries funeral home then Garner for Sunday 2 30 p m burial in Concord township cemetery near Garner He was born July 25 1871 in Ford County Alabama married to Effie Elizabeth Raysay Survivors include wife a brother Lewis F E Lyman of McHenry North Dakota and many nieces and nephews He was an elder in the Garner United Presbyterian Church later transferring to the Washington Church active in church work.
Willis Wittmers and Mrs Witton presented a music program at the Washington Kiwanis meeting, with novelty selections. Mr Wittmer, Renwick schools superintendent, and visiting Sidkourney men discussed forming a Kiwanis club in their community, with Oscar Stoltz presiding as lieutenant governor.
A 3 year old carnival worker, George Morgan of Camden N Y, held a rattlesnake’s head in his mouth during a side show and was bitten on the tongue in a bid to die. Doctors fought to save him after he expressed despondence over news of a brother’s death in Korea. The show owner said Morgan had been warned not to open cages before the act. He was rushed to Ilion Hospital after telling attendants he too wanted to die.
The American Legion urged its three million members to send bands food and clothing to flood victims in Kansas and Mississippi. A clearing house was set up at the national headquarters to collect information and distribute contributions. National Commander Eric Cocke urged posts in the lower Mississippi valley to mobilize disaster relief groups if conditions worsen.
Dedication of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic church in Richland set for Wednesday August 1 with a 10 a.m. service and solemn high mass led by Bishop Ralph O Hayes of the Davenport diocese. Father Paul C Wetzstein will assist as parishioners and one carpenter completed most of the work on the fireproof steel structure with aluminum exterior and permanent stone front.
The Mississippi and Missouri rivers breach levees north of St Louis as floodwaters threaten 34 000 acres of bottomlands. Crews evacuate 200 people at Creve Coeur Memorial park and residents rush to reinforce Bradshaw and Hunn levees.
Washington merchants were warned today to watch for a short change artist active here this morning. The man bought items, paid with a $20 bill, and left with the purchase, the change, and the $20 note unseen by the clerk. He was a stranger to the merchant and may attempt more before leaving town.
Des Moines reports that a 125 acre camping ground will be free for visitors to the state fair from August 25 to September 6. The site will include city water, street lighting, showers, post office, fire department access, an all weather road, and modern sanitary facilities. Space will be allocated for tents and trailers with an equipment depot offering tents cots and chairs for rent.
Mrs. Nora Dryden of Ainsworth was admitted Thursday to Mercy Hospital in Iowa City for medical treatment. Harry Marlowe Jr. was called to Indianola after the death of Mrs. Marlowe's mother Mrs. Arthur Woodcock. Mrs. Marlowe had been there this past week due to her mother's illness. Dr. and Mrs. Mills J. Taylor and their son John of Philadelphia are visiting a week with relatives in the R. J. Patterson, Frank Miller and George Rudiger homes.
A two day Atlantic seaboard storm killed at least 16 people. Eleven by lightning and five by accidents. A Newark to Miami flight belly landed near Richmond Virginia with 33 aboard without injuries. Other deaths occurred from Maine to Alabama.
Iowa figures released by Secretary of State Melvin Synhorst and Washington officials indicate most population growth from 1940 to 1950 occurred in cities. State total rose from 2,588,268 to 2,621,075 with preliminary city counts including Des Moines and Davenport among others.
Mrs W J Fitzpatrick of Western Springs arrived Thursday to spend several days with her parents Mr and Mrs H A Montgomery.
Funeral service for James Snyder will be held at 2 p m Saturday at the Fredonia Methodist church with Rev C Sears officiating. Burial will follow in Indian Creek cemetery. Stacy funeral home handles arrangements.
A Korean war veteran and his mother died in a Sabula auto crash on Highway 67 near Linton. Youth Eugene Paul Austin, 20, of Anamosa, was killed in a stock car accident at Maquoketa fairgrounds. Lyle Ravnsberg, 18, Castana, drowned in a pool near Caustana. Ernest Tickle, Kinrest? Tickle, a Rock Island rail motor car derailment near Buckeye injured five others. James Nieuwendorp, 10, Sheldon, died in a two car crash near Sheldon in OBrien county.
Newton plants resume work as employees approve a contract outline after a 19 day strike. The agreement raises base pay for incentive workers and adds 15 cents an hour for day workers. It improves seniority and social insurance, with skilled-worker rate adjustments up to 30 cents an hour. J A Rose cautioned full operation will take weeks.
Samuel Mason told the Senate committee that a mysterious associate named Bugart received most of the funds from his alleged influence racket. He claimed victims paid more than 87 500 from five clients, while denying as much as 250 000 in total. Bugart, first met in a St Louis bar, is said to be in Australia.
Yasutaro Kasaya a well known YMCA leader from Japan will be the Sunday speaker at the United Presbyterian church union service sponsored by the YMCA Local ministers will assist at the service in the weekly program over Sunday evening.
Russell Lloyd Carter paid a $1 fine in city police court for improper parking. Robert B. Schnebelen was fined $1 for damaging the school lawn by driving his car over it.
