Washington reports the House approved a middleman profit guarantee by 166 to 102, aiming to set ceiling prices for farm and nonfarm goods. The measure defines reasonable profit as the average earnings of the four most profitable years from 1946 to 1949, with formal roll call pending.
Journal office confirms a hospital item mislisted Mrs Marshall Koehler and son. the erroneous entry cost Mr Koehler many 25 cent cigars, pleasing friends, but no son was born.
Members of the ministerial society and their families gathered at the Christian church Monday evening for a farewell honoring Rev. and Mrs. F. A. Hahn of the Nazarene church. A cooperative dinner was served and gifts were presented to the Hahns and Wilma O’Riley for her role in directing the union vacation Bible school.
Washington Jaycees rally to sell Opportunity Books set at 1.00 to fund community programs. Each book contains 40 local merchant coupons with varied discounts and merchandise values valid through November. About 15 members will be on the square Saturday night to sell remaining books.
Lt Commander Robert F Edmondson of New Orleans commands an all reserve Corsair fighter squadron aboard the USS Princeton. A World War II veteran, he recalls heavy combat in the Pacific and notes Korean flights are daily with three hour missions. He holds the Navy Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals and is married to Marguelone Pujol Edmondson.
Scattered thunderstorms with heavy winds caused more damage to crops and utilities in northeast and central Iowa. Shel don Primghar Hartley Sibley and Des Moines reported outages and downed lines while Council Bluffs Northwood and Sioux City measured rainfall. Des Moines forecast cooler temperatures as a northern air mass moves in.
Sergeant Elliot R. Gerd of Burlington Marine recruiting office announced an extension of the voluntary enlistment period to August 1 from July 15. Selective service registrants with pre induction physcals but no induction orders may choose a branch under the new directive from Des Moines district headquarters.
Claude Woods is named scoutmaster of the United Presbyterian church troop and calls a meeting at the church at 7 p m tonight to organize the troop. The church advisory board announces new leadership and an assistant will be named soon.
In Kaesong Korea on July 19 UN and Communist teams faced a major sticking point delaying the first phase of cease-fire negotiations. The UN said progress included two agreed points and work toward an agenda while North Korean troops and civilians showed fear and hostility toward foreign press amid a tense market scene.
Secretary of State Acheson said the United States and Spain are exploring ways to strengthen common defense against possible aggression, despite British and French opposition. He noted Admiral Sherman’s Madrid interview with Franco and said no details will be disclosed. He did not say if a separate defense pact or Spain's NATO membership is favored.
Three persons were seriously injured today when two cars collided on highway 62 one mile south of EC and plunged into a cornfield. Robert Ware 18 Bloomfield Charles White 27 Ottumwa and Pauline Zesiger 17 were in serious condition in a hospital. Police identified Ware as the driver of the auto that struck White's car. Ware's car was attempting to pass White's auto. The girl was a passenger in Ware's car.
Lawrence J. Jack Trotter of Ainsworth died in Des Moines after long illness. He was born April 6, 1896, and was a pharmacist who owned a drugstore in Ainsworth with his brother. Survived by wife Hazel, daughter Marilyn, three sisters and three brothers. two sons preceded him in death. Funeral plans pending.
Defense department reports American battle casualties in Korea through last Friday total 79 129, up 413 from the prior week. The figure includes 15 250 dead 6 783 wounded 0 652 still missing and 159% captured with 1 535 previously missing but returned to duty.
Guiseppe Belgiojoso of Milan Italy spoke at the Kalona Rotary meeting comparing Italian and American agriculture. He toured a dairy farm bank creamery and cheese factory before departing for Chicago to visit stock yards and other sites.
The Civil Rights Congress faces bail bond trouble in New York federal courts and plans a name change to a new label. It originated from merged Communist fronts in 1946 and now faces court actions over bail funds as judges set precedents that bail providers become officers of the court.
Sheppard Rath, 46, who escaped the state hospital at Mt. Pleasant on June 19, was apprehended in Riverside Tuesday night, the Washington county sheriff's office reported. Hospital officials planned to return Rath to the Mt. Pleasant facility.
Four incidents in Wayland left residents injured. A four year old twin suffered facial and mouth lacera tions from a collie and required over 100 stitches. William Freyenberger needed fourteen stitches after a tractor fall. Dale Diers broke a wrist and nose in a basement staircase fall while carrying laundry.
Dr. Logan of Keokuk the district's only past American Legion commander spoke at the Leon Beaty dinner. The event installed new officers for the coming year and featured entertainment by Herb Olsen plus a Boys' State report by Roger Wageoner. Charles Hotle served as installing officer and Maynard Brown presented the past commander's pin to retiring commander Marion Rapp.
Mrs Richard Stagers of Richland has entered Mercy hospital in Iowa City. She is in room 324 and would enjoy hearing from her friends.
