Police warn thieves after 16 cone shaped objects stolen from a Hayward quarry are declared dangerous. Officer Dale Lawson found the cones on the front seat of his patrol car outside the police station Friday.
A Crawford County grand jury returned thirteen indictments alleging poor management and maladministration. It urged five county officials to resign or be fired, named two supervisors, a home steward, an engineer, and a road foreman, and called for legal action to recover funds from the county and its drainage districts. Over 75 witnesses were heard amid scrutiny of the county road equipment inventory valued at 886 555 dollars.
Investigations by the FBI and Army began into a series of explosions at the Kent Manufacturing plant in Chestertown, Maryland, killing at least 10 and injuring about 50 with five missing. Jets overhead sparked panic among residents as officials ruled out jet vibrations as the cause.

Seven American soldiers held in Communist Czechoslovakia for 11 days said they were handcuffed, blindfolded and questioned up to six hours at a time by guards who meant business. Captain Jack M. Davis of Raytown Missouri spoke at a press conference as the men were released by Czech authorities after confinement in roughly the border region.
Milt Chapek 80, of Cedar Rapids formerly of Kalona and Richmond, died Friday after a month illness in University Hospital Iowa City. Services Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church Richmond at 9 a.m. with Rev. Roeckmann. burial in Richmond Catholic cemetery. Rosary 8 p.m. Sunday. Born December 18 1873 in Richmond he moved to Cedar Rapids in 1926 and was a retired carpenter. Survived by son Glen Cedar Rapids daughter Mrs Otto Werner Mason City grandson Warner Werner Mason City brothers William Richmond and A H Chapek Homestead.
