Washington County Hospital history traces back to 1907 start
The Washington county hospital marks its 40th year since dedication July 16, 1912 but roots go back to 1907 when local doctors formed a plan. Mrs Laughead led initial care in the Laughead home at 03 North Iowa Avenue, treating five to six patients nightly until the county hospital opened. A 1910 Munger bill enabled county hospital elections, with Dr C C AL Boice and Marsh W Bailey pivotal in campaign and construction oversight. W P Wells donated land for the site, creating the Wells park surrounding the hospital.

Washington County Hospital Turns 40 With Local Support
The county’s hospital, funded entirely by local residents, began with a 25 bed capacity and 30 000 dollar cost. Roy Davis led the hospital award while Fred L. Stewart secured the plumbing contract. The 1942 bond issue of 75000 funded a ten year expansion doubling capacity to 54 beds. Over 45000 patients have been treated in 40 years with local physicians active in upgrades and health programs. The first patient treated was the mother of Milwaukee railroad agent Frank Broadgate. How ard Benn, now a county supervisor, presided at a birth in the early years.
