Washington bicentennial time capsule trust grows interest
Interest of 163.04 was added to a 3,000 anonymous gift placed in trust for the Washington Community School District when the bicentennial time capsule was sealed on July 4, 1976 in Washington. The gift remains in a passbook savings account at Washington Federal Savings and Loan for 100 years, with a duplicate deposit book sealed in the George Washington Time Capsule monument in Central Park as part of the county bicentennial.

Washington youth pleads innocent to drug charge
Donald E. Lower of Washington pleaded not guilty today to possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. The 19 year old was arraigned in Washington County District Court and waived his right to a speedy trial. Police arrested him June 23 after a search of his mobile home found marijuana and drug related items. He remains free on bond pending trial.

Jobless rate edges up in Washington County May
Job Service of Iowa reports Washington County unadjusted unemployment at 2.3 percent in May, up from April as 220 people are jobless in a labor force of 9,720. Labor force rises from 9,350 in April with agriculture creating new jobs, though 10 more residents are unemployed. Iowa's May unadjusted rate stands at 2.7 percent and the national seasonally adjusted rate is 6.9 percent.

Williams found guilty of first degree murder in Powers case
Robert Anthony Williams was convicted of first degree murder for the 1968 Christmas Eve death of 10 year old Pamela Powers of Urbandale. The Linn County jury of 12 deliberated over three days and returned a unanimous verdict. Williams faces a mandatory life sentence with sentencing set for August 5. The retrial followed an earlier 1969 conviction that was overturned on appeal amid challenges to interrogation tactics and the so called Christian burial speech.

The Mid-Prairie Community School District approved bids totaling 1.457 million dollars to Conners Brothers Construction Co. for a new Wellman elementary building and a Kalona addition. The Wellman project will be a 30,000 square foot, 13 classroom facility with arts, library, admin and a multipurpose room, while Kalona adds six classrooms, a library and restrooms in a 14,000 square foot building. Construction could start in two to three weeks and finish in one year. The district serves Kalona, Wellman, Washington Township and West Chester elementary students.

Theft spree hits residences and vehicles in Washington
Police pursue a four thefts and a break in across Washington. A 1977 yellow Yamaha 100cc valued at 600 dollars was stolen from East Madison.
