U.S. officer killed in ambush near Saigon

An American Army officer and 22 Vietnamese paratroopers were fatally hurt when a mine exploded on a highway 40 miles north of Saigon. Viet Cong guerrillas ambushed a 280-strong para column near Bau Long, as U.S. and Vietnamese forces pursued them with air and ground support. The ambush followed by air strikes and helicopter tracking, with efforts continuing to engage the retreating guerrillas.

Plan New Maneuvers To Save Compromise Farm Legislation

Break-In At Ainsworth Cafe Steals Cigarettes and Cash

Ainsworth Cafe on Main Street was broken into Friday night. About 50 cartons of cigarettes and $25 in cash were taken, according to Washington County sheriff reports. Entry was gained by forcing the rear window amid a spate of local break-ins this period.

Jerry Wald Dies Of Heart Attack In Beverly Hills

Producer Jerry Wald aged 49 died of a heart attack in Beverly Hills after a recent illness and hospital stays. The Brooklyn native created hits like Peyton Place and Johnny Belinda while pursuing projects from Kennedy’s The Enemy Within to Joyce Ulysses, steering his own company since 1957 and leaving widow Constance and two sons, Andrew and Robert.

Flash Flooding Strikes Iowa City Area

Torrential rains dumped about 7 inches across central and eastern Iowa triggering flash floods along the Ralston Creek in Iowa City. The Red Cross aided 14 residents who fled flooded homes near Iowa Avenue as the creek rose over its banks. Airport runways were flooded and Interstate 80 and U.S. 218 were briefly closed by mud and floodwaters.

Saskatchewan Premier names to cabinet amid doctors strike

Regina reports Premier Woodrow Lloyd accuses the Saskatchewan College of Physicians and Surgeons of harassing doctors under the Medicare Act. He cites the expulsion of Dr Gerhardt Beck of Florida and notes another U S doctor remains in Prince Albert while Beck leaves Leader hospital. Beck says registrar ordered him to quit under threat of arrest. Lloyd apologizes to Beck and praises his emergency service.

Prime Minister Harold Macmillan ousted seven of 21 ministers and promoted Richard Butler to deputy prime minister. Stanford Student Jailed in East Germany for Helping Escape

Stanford sophomore Robert Mann was sentenced to 15 months in an East German prison for aiding an East Berlin locksmith, Uwe Sturberg, 24, to flee to the West. The court subtracted six months already spent in jail, and Mann faced a potential 30 month term. His father and a mission observer attended. Mann had no Western lawyer and was defended by an East Berlin attorney.
