Lawmen pursue leads after burglars break into the Benner Food Store through a rear basement door and steal about $700 intended for payroll. Sheriff Charles Snyder notes no clues yet with fingerprints being sought as investigators examine the scene and inventory for losses. Also reported is the death of Mrs. Merton Seals of Wellman and funeral arrangements.
The Washington Evening Journal announces rate increases effective July 16. Carriers in Washington and county towns will pay 25 cents per week, with annual mail rates for Iowa and outside Iowa to be adjusted due to rising operating costs and newsprint prices. The paper cites a 152 percent cost rise over seven years and aims to preserve service levels.
In a joint reply the communists agreed in principle to Kaesong becoming a neutral zone and consented to admit two World Free Press correspondents under protest. Ridgway planned to respond after review as UN convoys prepared to move to Kaesong if terms were accepted.
Wellman Independent School District voters will go to the polls on August 7 to authorize a bond purchase of housing units for teachers. The board seeks to acquire Real estate on Main Street including a Yoder property plus six additional lots to fund housing. The T. H. Peters Hardware store marks its sixteenth anniversary this week after Tom and Mrs Peters moved from Carlisle Iowa to take over the business sixteen years ago. The shop on the south side of the square has expanded and joined the Iowa Retail Hardware Association, with current staff Bill Kendrick Christy Baer and Don Mitchell assisting in management.
Dr. Logan of Keokuk the first district's only past department commander of the American Legion will speak at Leon Beatty post annual chicken dinner and officer installation Tuesday July 17 at Legion rooms city hall. Dinner starts at six with a free will offering. Retiring commander Marion Rapp says entertainment from radio entertainer Roger Waggoner is planned and Boys' State delegate Roger Waggoner is to report. Installation of officers will highlight the evening and all Legion members and those eligible are invited.
Authorities probed thefts from the Mount Ayr mill and Hawkeye lumber yard. Burglars pried open an office door, knocked a dial off a safe, and forced a money container, taking about $1,508. They entered the yard via a rear sliding door, taking $8 from an open safe while ignoring checks.
A Friday noon crash on South Iowa avenue caused over 100 in damage to two cars. Sheriff investigators said Mrs. Ruth Richards backed a vehicle on route three in Washington into another car, owned by Hal Richards.
Chairman Joseph C O Mahoney said Congress may seek an additional 2 billion for defense this year atop Truman's 60 billion request for fiscal 1952. About 1 billion would start expanding the air force to 150 groups. He warned of an unprecedented drain but argued the life of free institutions is at stake. Wherry urged expert testimony on a new pattern emphasizing strategic air power and flexibility across battlespaces.
Senate house conference restores White House operating funds and funds for 60 000 low cost public housing units for 1952. The panel trims annual leave for government workers from 26 to 20 days and cuts salary funds by 10 percent for over 30 agencies. It also orders 25 percent cuts for press officials and bars chauffeurs in all agencies except the White House. Guest visitors to the Verle Gallagher home include Horace Allen Dennis and Mrs Kate Gallagher from Los Angeles.
In Manawa Wisconsin M SGT Melvin O Handrich the 31 year old son of a farmer was buried in a small roadside cemetery. He earned the Congressional Medal of Honor in Korea for directing artillery during an enemy assault and refusing evacuation. A World War II veteran Handrich died while holding his position as UN forces retook the area. The American Legion conducted the simple graveside ceremony and the flag was given to his father.
A massive gasoline fire at an alcohol plant and nearby tanks threatens residential districts as floods drive 100000 from their homes. National guardsmen cordon 12 blocks while dynamite may be used to create a fire break.
U S ambassador Henry F. Grady said Britain and Iran were near softening their rigid positions in the costly oil dispute. He spoke from Tehran and noted gradual moves toward compromise.
Mrs. John Jarvis of 1121 East Main Street reports a hybrid Regal Lilly flowering this week in her garden. The plant produced 16 blossoms, about 10 or 11 more than average, all forming a wreath at the flower's tip while several buds earlier bloomed and then fell off.
Sunday evening union church services are at 7 30 at United Presbyterian Church. Dr E L Haney pastor of the host church will be the speaker on An Interview With Jesus. Special music features the choir and a duet by Mrs Sara Miller Morrison and Frances Miller with other ministers assisting.
One year of operation for Fashion Cleaners under Keith Crossett begins tomorrow. The shop at 104 North Iowa Street has longtime resident Crossett, his wife Mary, and employees Matt Hannila and Mrs Glenn Garrett in its crew.
Des Moines forecast calls for fair weather tonight and Sunday with a warmer trend. Lows 60 to 66, Sunday highs 85 to 90, southwest winds 10 to 15 mph today increasing to 15 to 30 mph Sunday. Warming trend continues Monday and Tuesday with scattered thunderstorms Monday night and Tuesday.
