A Waterloo resident Kathryn Clifford age 69 was found dead by her daughter Mrs Leonard Wolf as a coffee pot boiled over extinguishing a gas flame. Her roomer Charles Ellis age 8 died later. Coroner Sidney D Smith ruled Mrs Clifford death accidental and she is survived by a son.
Governor Robert D. Blue announced plans to designate November 22 as Thanksgiving Day. He noted inquiries already came in and said he will align with Congress on observing Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November.
Central City farmer William Blount faced a forced disposal of a five day old beef carcass after a cow with a broken leg was slaughtered. The OPA classified the meat as 400 pounds of hamburger requiring a farm slaughter permit grading and red point sales rules. Cliff Butters of Central City offered to buy and cut half the carcass for market sale.
Sylvia McConnell a six year old girl of Creston suffered lockjaw after catching her heel in machinery. She was treated in a Creston hospital and given serum Tuesday during a flight to Des Moines. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Alvan McConnell farmers near Creston.
Nearly $1,000 in cash and over 6,000 red ration points plus blue stamps sugar stamps beer and cigarettes were stolen by burglars who broke into two lunchrooms and a grocery store in Fort Dodge. Mrs Sylvia Moore reported the loss of 948 dollars and more than 6,000 red ration points. The steel safe was smashed.
In Iowa Falls Mr and Mrs L J Montgomery recognize their son Private Robert Montgomery a radioman shown in a local cinema news short filmed on Iwo Jima the second day he served and killed on the third day Feb 22.

Two Nazi prisoners Erich Gauss and Rudolph Straub were hanged at Leavenworth KAN for the murder of a fellow inmate over claims of unfair food sharing between American and German prisoners in Aiken South Carolina. Straub spoke his last words in German asserting guilt under orders. Gauss glanced around the chamber before death.
Final report on the seventh war loan from the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago shows county purchases totaling 1 672 242 75 dollars, with a county quota of 1 565 000. Corporate buys topped their 67 000 quota by 403 488, while individuals bought 1 201 753 5 dollars short of their 1 298 000 target. E bonds reached 801 780 75 dollars, 80 269 25 short of 882 000, leaving the county at 90 8 percent of the E bond goal.
