Rocket tragedy at protective bunker during war games
At Eglin’s Urlburt Field a TAC war games exercise saw a low-flying F-100 fire four inert rockets at a reinforced bunker, killing Lt. Col. Sherman R. Smith and Capt. Mercer R. Ferguson and wounding 14 others. A full inquiry was launched to determine if human or mechanical error caused the accident. Two officers killed were identified with homes in Mary Esther Florida and Waukegan Illinois. Adjusted details note no explosion occurred when the rockets struck the bunker and the incident involved a 200 square foot reinforced concrete shelter used to judge pilot performance. The plane strafed a remote area with 50 caliber machine gun fire when the rockets were fired.
