Iowa Corn Output Seen Down But Per Acre Yield Up
Iowa's July USDA forecast lowers state corn to about 666.5 million bushels, 14 percent below 1960, while per acre yield is expected to rise to roughly 66 bushels. Oat crop projected at 143.6 million bushels, soybeans planted to 3.518 million acres, with August yield estimates pending. The emergency feed grains program appears to have reduced corn acres to 10.1 million, down from 12.17 million last year. national corn crop seen at 3.175 billion bushels, down about 700 million from 1960. Owners of house trailers and mobile homes in Washington County must pay a five dollar annual registration fee by August 1 at the county treasurer’s office. Two of the airliner crash victims near Denver were Iowa relatives. Mrs. Casey D Shepard of Davenport and Miss Regina Vogel of Oakland Calif. were named among the dead. Shepard owned the Shepard Home for elderly people in Davenport and was en route to Colorado Springs for a funeral. Vogel, former Sigourney resident and longtime Oakland Veterans Hospital nurse, planned retirement within a year. Survivors include Shepard’s Davenport relatives and Vogel’s siblings in Sigourney Keota and Harper communities.
