Tax commission figures show Washington County retail sales rising to 7.952 million in 1944 from 7.133 million the prior year. Henry and Jefferson counties posted 1944 totals of 6.319 million and 6.024 million respectively.
PUBLIN July 12 A plot to overthrow Premier Ramon De Valera's government by force was smashed with the arrest of 40 members of the outlawed Irish Republican Army. Police disclosed that the would be rebels were among about 400 IRA members released from Curragh interment camp after the war. Sean MacCool commander in chief of the outlawed army was re arrest ed as he neared Mayo on return from a prior detention.
The two day old son of Roscoe M. and Eunice White was taken from Sherman’s funeral home to Mt. Zion Cemetery near Martinsburg for graveside services at eleven this morning. He was born Monday evening at the hospital and died Wednesday morning eight miles southwest of town.
The U S army will stop supplying food to civilians in liberated Europe on August 1. Purchases and distribution will largely shift to liberated governments. Russia will receive continued lend lease meat in July August and September with a 430 000 ton request for late 1945.

The Office of Price Administration announced that airplane stamp No. 4 in war ration book 3 becomes good for one pair of shoes beginning August 1. Stamps No. 1, 2, and 3 remain valid indefinitely. The last stamp validation was November 1.
Senate Foreign Relations Committee moved swiftly to conclude hearings on the U N charter with a schedule aimed at closing tomorrow afternoon. Witnesses urged ratification, some with reservations on delegating authority and police force, while others framed the charter as essential for international cooperation and education to preserve peace.
Washington August 17. Naval airmen have destroyed more than 17,000 Japanese planes and will join with army jets to eliminate the enemy air force as an effective weapon. Undersecretary Artemus Gates said the first goal of naval aviation and the army air forces is destruction of Japan’s air strength. since Pearl Harbor the navy and Marine Corps have lost about 2,700 planes while destroying over six times that number of Japanese aircraft.
Iowa airplane owners likely avoid state license fees this year as the new state aeronautics commission convened at the statehouse. At the Wednesday meeting Quy Richardson of Jefferson said forms would not be ready soon. three of five members attended. Richardson was named chairman with Harry Lisk of Independence elected vice chair.
Clerk of the Court reports new birth record rules for adults. The affidavit will no longer record adult births. for children ages one to twelve the form can record if the original is missing. Applicants over twelve must provide two documents over five years old showing age and birthplace, with clerks approving and certifying. Only the clerk’s office and state health department may approve the evidence. The change aims to ensure documents are accepted for all purposes.

Kiesey after robberies across Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, and Nebraska. If unclaimed within six months, it will go to the county school fund. a Nebraska victim has a potential claim but no proof exists.
Washington July 12 report shows U S combat casualties at 1 047 680, up 10 743 from a week ago. Army losses reach 915 718 with 131 962 for navy marine corps and coast guard. Of 667 674 army wounded 346 5171 have returned to duty and 117 213 army POWs 94 020 liberated.
George B. Sheehe Iowa state director of the USDA office of supply says the school lunch program will be extended for 1945-46. Schools child care centers and summer camps may participate on about the same basis as last year with sponsors able to renew last year contracts under a simplified procedure.

Edward Hoverman, 40, of New Hampton Indiana, said one of four robbers beat him near here Tuesday night and returned 25 cents for bus fare after stealing his gold watch and twenty dollars. He told deputies and three men and a woman jailed Wednesday morning they could have the 25 cents back now. The bus driver had given him a free ride.
