Stupid Flight Ends Early For Jim Bede Solo Run
Jim Bede, 34, abandoned a plan for a nonstop solo flight around the world after a gyrocompass failure near Hopkins Airport. He described the abortive run as a stupid mistake for not checking the instrument beforehand. The BD2, a fuel heavy modified glider with 565 gallons, used most of Hopkins runway before a belly landing ended the attempt that could have eclipsed the civilian nonrefueling world record.

Pirates seize freighter off Florida coast and vanish in Miami Beach
Six armed Cuban men commandeered the 350-foot Panama freighter Freight Transporter early today three miles off the Florida coast. They wrecked the radio, escaped in a lifeboat to Miami Beach, then boarded a taxi and disappeared into the resort city. Coast Guard later confirmed the incident and the ship was ordered to stand by.

South Vietnamese drive repels large Communist attack near Saigon
In a fierce clash 60 miles north of Saigon, about 250 South Vietnamese troops and four American advisers repelled an assault by roughly 1,000 Communist fighters who bombarded, surrounded, and charged the allied post. UPI reports at least 140 North Vietnamese were killed, with scenes of hand to hand combat and heavy ammunition fire as Capt. John Lewin described the chaotic defense.

Des Moines police report no new leads in the murder of Leota Camp a 25 year old mother of three found stabbed four times in her home. Minden teen drowns at Lake Macbride near Iowa City
Daniel G. Sturdavant, 17, of Minden, drowned Monday while swimming with six Cedar Rapids Hiawatha youths at Lake Macbride 14 miles northeast of Iowa City. His body was recovered in 30 feet of water 50 feet from the beach after a life guard ordered the group back. Dallas Cooling, a Solon volunteer firefighter, helped recover him. This marked the second drowning at Lake Macbride this year.
