The body of 28 year old Roger Rossow of Manchester was found in his car near the Dickinson Osceola county line. Lawmen say evidence points to suicide with a discharged shotgun found beside him and the car windows locked from inside.
A Morgan Wellman death is ruled as death by own action by a jury at an inquest led by Coroner W. B Kyle. The case centers on Alfored Morgan shot at his home and later dying at Washington county hospital. Morgan's wife testified of a threatening letter. Funeral services set for Sunday at Bidwell Funeral Home. He leaves three children and several siblings.
Senator Wheeler charges American and British officials are discussing pooling naval resources for a divided patrol of the Atlantic and surrounding waters. He cites Prime Minister Churchill’s remarks as a trial balloon, while Secretary Knox denies hostilities with German raiders have begun. Wheeler says talks have been under way for some time.
Rev. Earl Hodgman Jr. of God's Missionary Army was sentenced to 15 days in Scott County jail on a charge of soliciting donations without a state permit. The sentence was suspended if the group ceases soliciting until a permit is obtained.
A storeroom fire in the S. W. Lashelle building on Main Street Marshalltown caused about $3,000 in damage to the structure and its contents. The Vic Bredimus typewriter exchange and Coast-to-Coast store on the first floor suffered smoke and water damage, with offices on the second floor also affected.
Fort Madison reports Joseph Klesner 64 a Lee county farmer living near St Paul was killed when a tractor he and his son Wilfred used to grind feed lurched forward after a broken clutch key knocked him down. He is survived by his wife another son and a daughter.
Burlington school district seeks 800000 to 900000 in federal aid for two 500 seat buildings to help immediate needs and long term plans stemming from ordnance plant presence. New facilities could open in 1942 43 with an immediate request of about 80000 to 100000 for equipment, staffing, buses and drivers.
George Singley Jr. was killed by a bolt of lightning during yesterday's storm in Moulton Iowa. He was the grandson of Mrs William Barnes of 615 South Avenue C. Mrs Barnes plans to travel to Moulton for the funeral and had often visited the Singley home.
The third in this summer’s union evening services will be Sunday at 7:30. If weather is fair it will be held in Central park, otherwise at the Methodist church. Rev. Carl W. Klein of St. Pauls Evangelical and Reform church will preach with other ministers taking part.
President Roosevelt sought 3.223 billion dollars in navy and maritime commission appropriations and authorizations. In 24 hours total requests reached 8.093 billion with 1.625 billion for the navy and 1.698 billion for the maritime commission. He also asked 4.77 billion for the war department to fund new army ordnance. The requests were sent to the House as a letter to Speaker Rayburn. He noted a 400 million defense installation item and stated it did not arm merchant ships. The maritime commission requests include 698 million in cash for new ships.
John Charles McKay a Burlington railroad agent in Washington for 46 years died at 11 45 PM in Washington county hospital after a day there. Funeral Saturday at L A Jones funeral home at two with Rev. John Decker. burial in Kim Grove cemetery. Fr Anderson station agent announced the Washington Burlington station will close Saturday 1 to 3 PM as mark of respect. He was born March 15 1872 in Jewel County Kansas and came to Washington at age two. Survived by wife Wilhemina A Anderson two sons soes of Washington Milburn of Elkhart Indiana one granddaughter Betty Jean McKay and brother Frank McKay. He started with G G Fox then Packwood Iowa agent for 25 years before returning to Washington 23 years ago. He retired four years ago after 46 years service. He trained many in telegraphy and station work. He belonged to the Methodist church and Modern Woodman lodge.
