In Modesto California Jim Hawthorne 38 and two companions were held after farmer Philip Jacobs reported Hawthorne visited his home claiming to be hired to kill him for a thousand dollars and offering to spare him if he paid five hundred, signaling a coercive extortion attempt.
Two Panora girls were killed and two others injured when the car they rode in rolled over on a country road northwest of Guthrie Center Iowa. The victims were Patricia Ann Willie 15 and Norma Maxine Henderson 19. Linnea White 16 driver and Agnes Flanery 17 were hospitalized in fair condition. Rosalie Cory 16 was not injured. The incident followed a work ride after which the vehicle skidded on loose gravel.
