Burlington column reports Leo Eversman a 27 year old farmer near Lattyla resisted officers with a rifle for over two hours. Deputies subdued him with a punch while others distracted him. A still three gallons of alleged corn whiskey and mash were seized at his home.
Pvt. Alfred M. Wachter 22 of Hamilton Field Cal home on furlough died in a diving accident on Wolf Creek four miles northeast of here. He struck his head on a log as he dived into the creek where youths were gathered. Coroner C H Mitchell Indianola ruled death from a broken neck.
Camp Dodge hosts seventy officers and 750 Iowa state guardsmen for summer field maneuvers as the 2nd Regiment arrives to replace the national guard now in North Africa and Italy. The 1st Regiment from southern Iowa will occupy camp for two weeks after the camp breaks up. Since January 1942, 1,620 guardsmen have entered the armed forces and 5,375 have enlisted, many veterans of World War I.
Robert Squires 39 of Cedar Falls died from injuries suffered Saturday night in an automobile collision three miles south of Waterloo. Chester Olson Hudson fractured left leg and head injuries. Leslie Olson Waterloo fractured left thigh and chest injuries. Roger Curran Waterloo head and body bruises. Squires had as passengers the two Olsons who had been helping put up hay.
Major Frank Miles, public relations director of state selective service, said inductions continue in Iowa as usual. He urged radio listeners that Camp Dodge closure does not end conscription and that Iowa will induct men monthly at varying levels, with some taken every month.
Rev George Kerr urged finding life’s zest through faith at a union church in Central Park. He warned against despair and dissipation, promoting Christianity as the anchor to endure war torn times with guidance from God. Special music featured Betty Stewart and Mise Stewart among others. Hartford officials announced a mass burial with interdenominational services for six unclaimed victims of Thursday's circus fire that caused 158 deaths.
Soviet reports say the Red Army launched a violent assault above Iasi in northeastern Romania and moved toward the Baltic, with the 1st White Russian army crossing the Bug river to push into German Poland, while Germans withdraw along a 350 mile front from Dvinsk to the Bug. Wilno held, Lida fallen, and encirclement threats grow as Baltic and Lithuanian fronts shift.
Washington County must reach its fifth war loan quota as of July end. Chairman G E Mace urged residents to buy more bonds, noting E F and G series remain countable through July. The county’s total purchases stood at 906,738 against a 1,243,000 target, with five banks reporting 120,000 in sales last week.
Mrs. G. W. Manussier Jr reports her husband has earned the rank of captain in the army air corps after eight months overseas in North Africa and Italy. The P-38 pilot completed 50 missions and will serve as an instructor at a base in Italy.
The Agriculture Department projects the 1944 corn crop at 2.98 billion bushels, the third largest on record but below last year’s 3.08 billion. The update comes from Washington, D. C., July 19.
A brief note states a person arrived in Iowa City this morning to spend two weeks with her mother Mrs. Lucille Jackson.
Civil Air Patrol conducted a recruiting event at Washington airport giving 142 boys aged 16 and 17 free airplane rides in Army planes. The day featured six CAP pilots from Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, a recruiting tent, Red Cross first aid, and cadet crews handling crowd control.
American troops smashed four miles beyond Volterra after capturing a key outpost before Livorno and threatened to shift coastal defenses ten miles below the Tyrrhenian port. Lt General Mark W. Clark’s forces pressed from Volterra against the 90th Panzergrenadier division as Italian patriots battled Germans in Livorno and guerrillas targeted Nazi lines.
A county selective service list shows 19 Washington county men slated for induction today into the army navy or marine corps. They traveled by bus to Burlington then onto a train bound for St. Louis near Camp Dodge replacement as induction center. Names include Roy A.
