A column notes A. R. Hult a former Rockwell City Advocate publisher has been employed by the Iowa liquor control commission to prepare news stories about the state liquor system and cultivate goodwill for the liquor law and operations in Des Moines.
Iowa City Prof J H Bodine head of the University of Iowa zoology department named secretary of the new Iowa basic sciences board. The board will administer initial examinations in the basic sciences to prospective medical students on October 8.
Wapello county relief engineers propose a $75,000 Des Moines river levee project at Ottumwa. The plan already has state approval and would employ about 50 men for several months.
In Council Bluffs 12 year old Donald Huenger was struck by a blast of water from a fire hydrant while seeking relief from the heat. The force knocked him over and caused a brain concussion.
R J Rogers once from Fort Wayne Ind claims 1200 members for a vacation club operating from Des Moines with a dozen stenographers at headquarters erected there and the chain set ter phrase appears as a label in the report.
A parrot escaped from Mr and Mrs E S Gay and now shelters in trees. Efforts by volunteers and the fire department with long ladders failed to coax the bird down. The bird perched high in a tree defiantly taunts rescuers with a mock call to “come and get me.”
About 15 undercover alcohol sellers agree to stop selling at midnight and resume at 7 am. It is now impossible to buy alcohol from association members on Sunday in Iowa City.
The Grocers Wholesale Co of Des Moines closed its plant indefinitely in response to 46 striking union warehouse men demanding a closed shop. A five member committee chosen by the board of directors made the decision, displacing 86 workers, including strikers 15 non striking warehousemen and office staff.
Investigation into the June 13 Des Moines train wreck that killed one and injured 13 failed to determine the cause. State railroad commission engineer H A Franklin reported the findings to commission members.
Muscatine Frank Degler 62 an unemployed button cutter was found dead in a goldfish pond at Riverside park. An inquest returned a verdict of death by suicide.
Des Moines district judge cites Ricka Find ley sister of the late Park A Findley for contempt after she reportedly refused to surrender keys to a safety deposit box held by his estate at Valley Savings Bank.
Des Moines reports Charles D Reed notes one third Iowa corn acreage wet and weedy while the rest advances after recent heat. Chinch bugs have disappeared and hot weather aids crops though county losses persist from weed choking. A Mapleton heat victim identified died. Charles Wright, 55, found in Keokuk lake. a cloudburst hits Ledges State Park creek.
Don Stover and his little daughter from near Washington visited town last evening. She bumped into a door and swelling closed one eye, affecting Kurt’s view of the scene.
Iowa liquor control commission reports total business down 7.2 percent in June with 87 stores operating. State store receipts fell from 480 539 in May to 445 796 in June. Permits rose from 3 003 to 4 742 50, including 3 462 for the new year starting July 1 1935. Des Moines, Council Bluffs and Sioux City stores show declines, Nebraska cross river trade cited.
Howard K. Green Cedar Run- Pids engineer outlined street surfacing and sewer plans for the summer. Council discussed changes to specifications to improve quality at no extra cost, and Green reported sewer plans for the west town area near completion with a projected $35 per front foot cost, subject to a possible 45 percent grant.
The Agriculture Department forecast a 1935 wheat crop of 731,054,000 bushels with July 1 condition at 77.1 percent. It projects a corn crop of 2,044,601,000 bushels, down from last year’s 1,377,000,000 and below the 1928–32 average of 2,566,000,000. The July 1 condition stands at 67.5 percent of normal.
The House voted 50 000 to prosecute and expand its inquiry into lobbying for and against the Wheeler Rayburn utilities bill. The Senate audit and control committee approved 50 000 for a Senate investigation of lobbying this session. Rankin protested the setup and demanded a special sub committee. The Senate sent the utilities bill to conference as the House Rules Committee cross examined RFC attorney Thomas Corcoran with few new facts arising.
A special dealer meeting of Standard Oil men will be held at the Y M C A here Friday evening July 12 at 8 00 it was announced today by the Davenport office of the company H J Bemis manager N E Kennard advertising manager Clarence Klepfer district manager for this territory and others will be here in addition to dealers from Washington and many surrounding cities They stress the importance of service and value of the meetings.
The Red Cross reports $350000 in relief spending this year for floods and tornadoes in 17 states. In Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri about 4300 families need aid to rebuild homes lost to the Missouri River flood. Arkansas and Oklahoma have 3500 families affected by floods in several rivers. Texas has about 2000 homeless from Rio Grande and other floods. Medical work includes vaccinations to prevent typhoid threats.
The Tennessee Valley Authority, Roosevelt's New Deal agency, moves toward a US Supreme Court ruling on its constitutionality after the Fifth Circuit in Atlanta weighs the Birmingham judge's finding that TVA cannot sell electricity. TVA attorneys argue surplus power is incidental to its navigation and flood control mission.
Cloudbursts drenched southern New York and northern Pennsylvania, widening flood devastation across about 20 000 square miles where 49 people have died since Sunday night. Forecasters expect the unprecedented rain to end today as workers reinforce the Van Atta dam to the south.
Demands by 35 striking warehouse workers led to the closing of the Grocers Wholesale company which supplies 615 retailers in Iowa Missouri and Minnesota. The shutdown left 87 workers unemployed and seeking new jobs.
Campbellstown residents faced peril as fire from nine burning oil tank cars spread to buildings injuring six men, one critically. Property damage was estimated at $100000 and the incident threatened about 1000 people in the town.
Water flood escalates as Hammondsport village is abandoned today. Authorities warned residents to evacuate while emergency crews frantically battled the rising waters in preparation for potential further damage.
The Iowa state railway commission approved Burlington Transportation Company of Chicago to run a freight and passenger motor line from Davenport and Muscatine to Council Bluffs and intermediate points. Washington and other Iowa towns including Oskaloosa Knoxville Winterset Greenfield and Oakland are on the route with permit pending final legal steps.
Sioux City July 10 A P reports Clyde Mayer, named as a key figure in a northwest Iowa graft network, entered the Woodbury county grand jury room and is believed to seek immunity in exchange for becoming a state witness. Mayer faces an indictment with Attorney General Fad Connor and 19 others on conspiracy to operate gambling devices. The grand jury plans to finish its work soon and adjourn.
Des Moines resident L. B. Hill is named to lead Iowa relief efforts as federal relief administrator. He will serve as Iowa state works progress director without pay and oversee approving public works under the 4.8 billion dollar relief program. Carl Pryor of Burlington becomes subordinate Iowa relief director as the state awaits the new federal chief.
