Christian C. Johnson, arrested on charges of defrauding Mrs. Leopold of 600 dollars after marrying her, denies being John Madson. Police report flood of inquiries and accusations of bigamy as Johnson claims he is married to only one woman despite admitting one marriage to Mrs. DeBennett of San Francisco.
The National Education association wrapped up with department meetings and a monster mass meeting in the Auditorium. Dr. Henry K. Favill of Chicago urged that the public school be the bulwark of public health and guard the child’s health as the basis for mental and moral integrity.
Four suffragettes led by Mrs Despard waited near parliament and tried to push through the police cordon around Prime Minister Asquiths Downing Street residence. They shouted for a hearing. the premier refused to listen and entered his home. The deputation was arrested for disorderly conduct and remanded until Monday.
St Petersburg July 10 M Zieustenoff a reporter for the Bourse Gazette and other papers was sentenced to death by a military court for robbing a tea store two years ago. He had earlier received eight years penal servitude for trying to rob the cashier's office of the Imperial theater but continued journalism under an assumed name. Authorities say the robberies funded revolutionary activities.
Mrs Vera De Noie born in Hong Kong and now in Seattle faces an alien unlawfully in the United States charge. She was released on a $1000 bail.
Major J. W. Long retired U. S. A. was fatally struck by a car driven by learner J. W. Lawrence. Lawyer Andrew Y. Bradley and Galen Green, who instructed Lawrence, were arrested after the collision near the embassy.
Fort Dodge Iowa July 10 Mrs Jonathan P Dolliver wife of Senator Dolliver was unanimously chosen president of the board of directors of the Young Woman s Christian association during the final organizing meeting.
Des Moines won a great victory from the interstate commerce commission on three freight rate decisions. Proportional rates on through traffic are ordered reduced.
Frankfort Germany July 10 Among the exhibits in the great international balloon and aeroplane exposition which opened in this city today and will remain open until October are flying machines as well known as those of the Wright brothers Count von Zeppelin Major von Parseval Count de la Vaulx and others whose recent exploits in navigating the air have held the attention of the entire civilized world. During the exposition dirigible air ships of rigid and nonrigid patterns aeroplanes and spherical balloons will be seen in flight and facilities will be offered visitors to make trips in air ships starting from the exhibition grounds. For sixty days during the exhibition there will be races and other competitions of a sporting and military character. Experiments with aeroplanes will be carried out on a specially prepared velodrome in the grounds. The Zeppelin and Parseval airships will take passengers on excursions along the Rhine. During the races communication will be kept up by means of the exhibition's own wireless telegraph system and carrier pigeons. Numerous prizes have been offered. The honorary committee of the exhibition includes such prominent aeronauts as Cortlandt F. Bishop Count von Zeppelin Major Gross Major von Parseval Professor Busley Professor Hergesell Colonel Schaeck Count de la Vaulx Prince Borghese Major General Kowanko Captain Amundsen.
Miss Hattie R. Garrison of Fort Dodge has been appointed superintendent of the State Industrial School for Girls at Mitchellville to succeed Frank P. Fitzgerald. The board cited her seven years directing the Benedict Home and her sacrifice in leaving Cedar Rapids for a reduced salary. Garrison will be paid 1809 dollars yearly plus living accommodations and likely assumes duty next week as Fitzgerald plans retirement.
Spiritualists from many states gather at Mount Pleasant park in Clinton Iowa for the Mississippi Valley Spiritualists association annual camp meeting. The reunion runs four weeks starting July 25 with about 400 attendees expected.
Professor Karl E. Guthe, head of physics at Iowa University, resigns to become professor of physics at the University of Michigan. He will effectively head the department, though the dean remains the nominal chief.
