The Bates House in Indianapolis is being auctioned with all furniture and fixtures sold before the building is demolished to clear space for a modern hotel. The historic Bates, once Indiana’s premier hotel, will vanish along with its name.
The Bates House Hotel, built in 1852 by Harvey Bates Sr., cost $60,000 with later upgrades bringing the total to $75,000. It hosted Lincoln, Johnson, Stephen A. Douglas, Indiana statesmen, and attended national events such as Vice President Hendricks's funeral, reflecting its prominent role in its era.

Close suffered severe wounds but was saved from death as medical aid stopped the bleeding and he is expected to recover. Authorities say jealousy sparked the attack.
Orchard Lake Michigan July 10 Colonel James A Buchanan commanding the district of Porto Rico has asked Colonel Rogers to recommend several graduates of Michigan Military academy for appointment as lieutenants in the Porto Rican provisional regiments of infantry for a three year term.
An explosion at the gas factory in Parker on July 10 seriously burned two men and a boy. Injured are P. L. Blodgett of Yankton owner of the factory, Frank Ely, and Ira Jones a boy. All are expected to recover.
Burglars broke into Patterson's Grocery at 136 West Main Street Jackson Michigan and took about 80 dollars from a safe in a money drawer. Entry was gained by climbing through a transom. No leads.
July 10 report from Cass City Michigan states Frank Brooks 15 and Albert Auslander 11 of Evergreen township were struck by lightning after Auslander's cows. They were found about a half hour after the storm ended.
Sioux City July 10 T J F Ward vice president of the LeMars National bank waived examination yesterday and was released on five thousand dollars bond.
Salvis Janero, a Mexican toreador, was tossed about forty feet by an infuriated bull at South Omaha on Monday night. His side was gored and two ribs broken. He was taken from the arena unconscious but not believed fatally injured.
The sixth annual convention of the Supreme Order of Foresters opened in Milwaukee with about fifty delegates from Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Minnesota and North Dakota.

Kinport’s attacker entered via a window and fled after injuring her abdomen. Chief suspects Jensen for the murder but not for the assault based on circumstances.
Oakland resident Colonel L. D. Carter was stabbed with a rusty dirk by Tom Bailey on a farm. Bailey, fleeing after shooting a bartender, tried to take Carter’s horse and buggy, then dumped Carter and fled. A posse tracked Bailey to a cornfield two miles from the city where he was captured.
The secretary of state in Springfield granted incorporation to the Olympian Games association of Chicago with $200,000 capital. Incorporators are W. R. Harper Volney W. Foster and John Barton Payne. The group aims to hold an international athletic meet reviving Grecian games in Chicago in 2003.

The navy department was advised that the Cramps of Philadelphia claim about 254000 dollars against the government for delay in finishing armor for the battleship Alabama. The delay was caused by congressional controversy over armor quality.

Jessie Morrison was sent to the Lansing penitentiary to serve a five year murder sentence for killing Mrs. Wiley Castle.
