Derailed Milwaukee Road freight disrupts 800 feet of track
Eleven cars of an 86 car Milwaukee Road freight derailed west of Washington at 3 p.m. Thursday at the W Main St extension intersection. No injuries were reported and cargo remained intact. About 800 feet of track damaged by a sun kink. workmen target repair by 1:30 p.m. if possible.

Pat Nixon Stroke Leaves First Lady Paralyzed
Pat Nixon remains in serious condition after a stroke at her San Clemente home. Dr. John Lungren said she has motor weakness on her left side and slurred speech but was in excellent spirits as she undergoes diagnostic tests and treatment at Long Beach Memorial Hospital. The family, including President Nixon and daughters, are at her side.

Mandatory life sentence in Mark family slayings case
Jerry Mark, convicted of four counts of first degree murder for the Nov 1 1975 Cedar Falls killings of his brother Leslie his wife Jorjean and the couple's two children Jeff and Julie, was sentenced to a mandatory life term at the Iowa Penitentiary. A Woodbury County jury delivered the verdict after a 21 day trial in Sioux City. The defense failed to obtain a new trial or bail pending appeal.

Free Preschool Vision Tests Offered by Local Optometrists
Washington optometrists Drs. Westphal Smith Mallory and Lemmon will hold free preschool vision tests for children entering kindergarten this fall. The screening, not a full exam, aims to identify visual problems and is conducted during regular office hours on Tuesday July 13 in cooperation with Washington Community Schools.
