Marshalltown boys and girls will participate in a fishing derby on the Iowa River banks. Mayor Darling and Municipal Judge L R Sheets will be on hand as starter and judge. Prizes will be awarded for longest and shortest fish and most fish caught, followed by a courtesy swim at the pool.
Mrs. Mary F. Clark, aged 100, was honored in Cedar Rapids on Thursday. A Pennsylvania native who traveled west in a covered wagon 85 years ago, she settled after crossing the Red Cedar River. She has eight children, six grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren, and remains in fair health.
Frank R. Ball, 49, a salesman from Dallas Texas, committed suicide by shooting himself in a lane northwest of Keokuk. He had come to visit relatives with his wife, visited his parents graves, then drove to the place where his body was discovered.
J. M. Stewart, 70, was killed in Indianola when he fell from an upstairs walk in the Harlan Lumber Co yard while following a clerk. Charles Fellows, slipping after becoming dizzy, lost balance and fell nine feet.
Carol Lynn Rowe a three year old sightless girl from Creston underwent an operation in Des Moines to restore her sight. Doctors report she recovered well but cannot yet confirm sight on completion. Mother Mrs. K W Rowe says nervousness has eased and a year will reveal the outcome.
Marengo officials face a $639 city hall fund surplus that statute says must be used to build or remodel a city hall. The city already has a hall and only requires repairs, which cannot be paid from this fund.
Charles Martin, a Des Moines resident, was found asleep in the Milwaukee yards near a rail just before a passenger train’s arrival. He had reportedly consumed alcohol and rested his head on a rail, prompting concern for his safety.
State Senator Edward Breen representing six Fort Dodge service station operators urged State Treasurer Leo Weeman to enforce the new gasoline price posting law. Breen said many dealers are not posting rebates and discounts as required by the measure.
Des Moines reports protests filed by 30 hotel and restaurant men against proposed state unemployment commissions valuations for employees meals and lodging. The plan raises meals from 2.50 to 4.50 weekly and 0.40 to 0.75 daily, with 0.20 to 0.25 per meal. Weekly board and room would rise from 3 to 7, and weekly room from 1 to 2.50, to cover employer unemployment contributions.
Peter McGargell age two, son of Mr and Mrs Ed McGargell of Imogene, drowned in a horse tank on the family farm. The couple also has a younger son.
France warned at the international non intervention commission that it would abolish neutrality on the Spanish border unless full international control of the Portuguese frontier is restored. Ambassador Charles Forbin urged immediate action, saying France would withdraw patrols to stop material aid to loyalists in Spain from crossing the Pyrenees.
Two cars were damaged in a mid afternoon crash on Wayland road just south of the city limits. Mt. Pleasant driver W B Hanenstein struck Joe Wright who was north bound and attempting to stay on the edge due to dust and traffic. Wright’s car swung and struck by Hanenstein’s rear, causing moderate damage but no injuries.
Leon Beatty post of the American Legion took the trophy for the largest percentage increase in membership over last year. The Washington post, with 172 members, earned top honors in a 4 000 to 5 000 population district, posting a 201 percent gain. LeMars ranked second at 166 percent and Marion third with 146 percent.
Washington county, six month totals show 356 203.88 paid over the counter, about 49 percent of the 727 635 levies for the year. Treasurer Marion S. George notes a slight drop from last July but expects strong September collections and reports 20 480.29 in delinquent taxes gathered this half year. District contest winners and town rankings are highlighted, with Iowa City leading 10 000 to 560 000 category, Ft Madison second, Keokuk third. Des Moines Legion parade status noted for next month.
Pierce Knox will perform Saturday evening with the municipal band. The program includes Bombasto and Rose Marie marches, the Crosley medley, Old Chestnuts novelty, Teddy Trombone march, El Capitan, 12th Street Rag, Anchors Aweigh, Pierce Knox March, Washington Post, Holt King Barnhouse Bousa pieces. The concert features a mix of marches and novelty numbers led by Knox.
Washington reached 97 degrees with a low of 67 last night while Des Moines reported a 65 degree start and a steady climb toward the heat peak. Forecasters warned of no relief as a clear sky heat wave persisted. Keokuk saw a 2.03 inch storm with basement floods and 40 mph winds. Atlantic recorded Iowa's high at 102 degrees.

Congressman Hamilton Fish pressed for probes into income tax returns of the Roosevelt family and key administration figures including Morgen thau and his father. He alleged stock transfers to ease taxes and cited other donors, while Representative Vinson challenged the claims as hearsay.
Democratic senators blocked Roosevelt's court enlargement bill after White House talks ended without a compromise. Senator Wheeler led the opposition with a sharp attack while Senator Vandenberg aligned with administration forces. Senator Hatch offered a compromise to allow one new justice each year for every justice over 75 who refuses to retire as Justice Van Devanter's resignation creates a vacancy.
Nearly 150 members attended the Journal's Three-Quarter Century club fourth annual gathering at the Country Club south of the city. A lunch, program, and guest list featured Mrs. John Dodd and Leigh Soule overseeing arrangements with YMCA help.
Senator Wheeler denounced the administration for a judicial reorganization bill saying it aims to pack the supreme court. He urged a constitutional amendment and blocked other business by opposing the AAA measure. He named Postmaster General Farley and aides as driving propaganda to spur support.
In Pieping, July 9, Japanese and Chinese troops were evacuated from a disputed area after a brief flare up caused by a misunderstanding. Militiamen replaced Chinese forces, and most Japanese troops were also withdrawn with few casualties reported.
The library finishes painting and repair work and will reopen on Monday. The renovation package completes a short closure and restores services and facilities for patrons.
Federal state weather and crops bureau notes soil conservation emphasis and rising alfalfa acres in 1936. Chief statistician J Farr Cook says alfalfa may soon be Iowa’s top day crop, with a 17.4 percent increase from 1935 as county assessors report higher total acreage across the state.
