The Associated Press reports the grim task of removing the dead from the submarine 5bl began today at Block Island. Twenty five sailors were unaccounted for since the vessel sank last September and the first body was carried by undertaker’s wagon to the navy hospital.
Melvin Crowell 25 of Lydon Wh was drowned while bathing in Rock river near Lydon yesterday afternoon. He pulled Miss Ruby Marson of Chicago into deep water. she was rescued with difficulty by witnesses who could not save Crowell.
In the first incident since New York subway strike began a derailed car between Bowline Green and South Ferry injured passengers and disrupted service. Reports say a recently hired motorman led to the accident with smoke from damaged insulation causing confusion. Police arrested two Interborough detectives for allegedly ejecting reporters from the scene. Service partly resumed within two hours as authorities warned of further action by striking workers and a 77 percent restoration claim by the Interborough.
Republican and Democratic district judicial conventions in OsKaloosa agreed that the three present judges in the sixth district will have no opposition in November. The slate includes Judge Charles A. Dewey of Washington, Judge Dan Hamilton of Grinnell, and Judge Henry F. Wagner of Sigourney on every ticket. George L. Benson 61 died at 1:00 a m at his home 11323 South Iowa avenue after a year of ill health and nine months under a physician care. Born November 18 1864 southeast of Washington he was a son of Joseph and Matilda Benson. Survived by his widow one brother J S Benson of Des Moines and one half brother M Benson of Washington. He and his wife raised a boy and a girl as their own. A longtime member of the Church of Christ he served as Sunday school superintendent deacon and elder. Funeral 3 30 Sunday at the Christian church with Rev F W Sutton presiding.
George McDaniel has purchased the McElhinney half of the McElhinney Drug Company to become sole owner and manager. The deal follows the death of J. S. McElhinney last month, with no change in policy and the store keep its name as The McElhinney Drug Company.
The Iowa state department of health mourns Marsh W. Bailey of Washington Iowa as a leading promoter of county hospital nursing and health units. Sylvester Chance died at 3 a m at his home 604 North Eighth avenue after years of poor health. Born July 25 1864 in Canton County Ohio he lived in Grace Hill and Washington counties as a bricklayer and stone mason. He married Minnie Deweese July 3 1897 and left seven children Mrs Harvey Cherwinker Mrs Lasay Lowe William gffie Bruvette Clarence Myrtle and one grandchild. Surviving brothers are John Allen Harvey of Washington Joshua in Kansas and George died last April. Funeral 1:30 Sunday at Goodin parlors conducted by Rev Willard White with burial in Bly Grove Cemetery.
