Grand champion Tom Skubal of Ainsworth won the grand champion bar row at the All-Iowa Fair market park show in Cedar Rapids. He previously claimed grand champion at the National Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo, two weeks earlier, in a repeat top prize run.
The Washington County Beef Producer's Association and Cooperative Extension Service announce a one day bus tour for cow calf producers on July 27. Stops include the Albia Experimental Farm and Chariton crossbreeding project with Dr. Richard William guiding, and a commercial Albia farm run by John Herron. Reservations due July 21 with a $5 bus fee.

Hartwick Commerce Commission Chair Kenneth Benda says hearings will reopen on the Knoxville Towa Telephone Co rate increase after a secret agreement allegedly influenced the earlier decision. The move excludes original commissioners, with Maurice Van Nostrand favoring the step and data based on 1966 figures.
Dave Myers a senior at Town Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant conducts twice weekly orientation sessions for CAP Center campers. He coordinates with CAP director Vernon Clark under the RSI program to prepare seven local youths for a nine week summer at the Southeast Lowa CAP prison farm near Ft. Madison funding his own time and work through college credits.
In Paris the U S negotiator David Bruce reported a decided no from North Vietnam and the Viet Cong to private talks on the seven point peace plan. The Communists insisted on full secret talks while signaling possible but unlikely future discussions. Madame Binh and Xuan Thuy urged the American side to respond with a mature approach.

Severe weather from a cold front caused widespread damage in Iowa. Independence saw a 75 mph wind storm that blew a bank roof off and left power out. seven planes destroyed at the municipal airport and three more damaged. Ames, Waterloo, Des Moines, and other towns reported high winds, downed poles, damaged trailers, and one fatal mobile home incident at Zrostlick. No injuries were reported overall.
The 1971 Washington County Fair announces its judges for livestock, poultry, and youth events. Paul Brackelsberg Ames leads market beef and beef heifer classes, with Eric Dee and Elroy Gruenwald handling swine and sheep dairy respectively. Horse and Pony duties go to Bob Fleming, Junior Feeder to Jack Scheeler, and poultry to C J Miller.
The Town Highway Commission and Federal Highway Administration will conduct origin and destination traffic surveys in Washington and Columbus Junction to aid highway planning. The Washington study starts July 16 and Columbus Junction begins July 12, funded by state and federal planning funds. Driver interviews and numerous traffic counts will be collected to estimate impacts of proposed projects.
The jazz great Louis Armstrong lay in public display in a Manhattan armory as thousands of mourners, many Black, gathered at dawn outside the building. Ernest Broglin of New York recalled meeting Armstrong in a New Orleans orphanage and called him a perfect entertainer who the world owes.
