In Thorndike Maine Mrs Barbara Hamlin’s friends planned a party to surprise her but kept the secret so well she left on a trip before anyone could tell her about the gathering.
Washington The house Ways and Means Committee approved a 16 to 9 vote to extend the excess profits tax to Jan 1. The measure, pushed by administration leaders, faces floor action this week or next despite Chairman Reed's opposition. The tax originally expired June 30 and would be retroactively restored.
The Walton chapter announces the Lake Darling Youth Center site will host a three day conservation school and camp for boys 10 and older on July 16 17 and 18. Registration is $5 with Dr A C Peterson and Tom English directing activities and experts including Dr Karl Frederick and Dr Peterson teaching conservation of life while swimming and hunting.
Tom Tanner was named commander of Leon Beatty American Legion post after a Tuesday election. John Whittaker and Harold Jarvis were named first and second vice commanders. Other officers include S. W. Easter adjutant Milo Orris finance officer George Baker sergeant at arms Everett Burham service officer Roy Steele historian. New executive members are Marion Rapp Tom my Tanner and Dave Masson. A chicken supper July 2 will install officers. A $750 vote funded a new building fund and the Red Cross blood bank will visit Washington July 22 23.

A ground breaking for the Fern Cliff Evangelical Free church will be held Sunday evening July 12 at 7 p m on the new grounds located three miles north and two and one half miles east of Wayland in the Fern Cliff timber area. The site, donated for church use, will include space for a church, parsonage and cemetery. The Fern Cliff congregation organized April 13, 1953 and belongs to the Evangelical Free church of America, a 351 church fellowship which added 24 new churches in 1952.
C E Walcott files in district court asking for a landlord writ of attachment against crops equipment and live stock in a dispute over a farm lease with Herbert J Peiffer and D Jean Peiffer. The petition seeks to determine if the lease was violated.
Wellman school district voters will cast ballots August 11 on funds for improvements to the heating plant in the public school building. The bond issue has been defeated in two earlier elections. A petition prompted a third election date.
Iowa hosts its first state wide farm safety field day and a level land plowing match on August 25 near Boone. Sponsored by the Iowa Farm Bureau extension service Boone County Boosters Committee Iowa Retail Farm Equipment Dealers Association and Radio Station WHO Des Moines the events occur on the Anton and Harold Rozengreen farms east of Boone.
Des Moines reports a nine year old boy, Robert Webb, was found wandering in a city park barefoot and underdressed claiming his parents left him there all day while they worked. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Webb, deny the tale and say he is a runaway. Juvenile court official Carl Parks said the parents agreed to leave Robert with court officials for a full investigation.
Following a citywide medical check of New York City police officers, officials reported that 19 officers were flat footed out of 19 000 examined, a fraction deemed normal and not affecting duties.
Bruce Campbell son of Mr and Mrs Herbert Campbell of near Ainsworth has been chosen to represent Washington county 4 H members at the state conservation camp to be held near Boone July 14 to 19 Approximately 50 boys and 50 girls from across the state are selected to attend The camp aims to teach conservation practices and delegates will return with knowledge for their home clubs Jim Elliott Washington county youth assistant will serve as counselor He is on the vespers committee and chairs the Wednesday night folk festival dedication at the camp site Sunday evening July 19 is open to club leaders and interested persons.

In Indianapolis President Truman said Democrats lost last November because voters were prosperous and easy-going and let demagoguery win. He stated he will not seek public office again and that his party remains optimistic about future wins, planning to meet Adlai Stevenson soon.
Sherman Young aged 25 from Des Moines died from injuries after falling 70 feet from a smokestack at the Kirkwood hotel. Police said a rope he was using while welding broke at the splice, sending him onto a roof over a hotel annex.
West Chester plans another weekly summer band concert on Thursday July 9 at 8 p.m. The program features marches and popular tunes by King Holmes Weber Merrill Griver Noble and DeLama with selections like Call to Victory Bombardier Deep River Rhapsody and That Doggie in the Window plus the National Anthem performed by the West Chester band.
Members of the Washington county Rural Young Peoples group gathered in Sunset Park Tuesday evening for a wiener roast a business meeting and a scavenger hunt. Marshall Rose and Jim Elliott led program arrangements. A committee for a fall junior fair tractor rodeo was formed with Gerald Howell Bill Crandall in charge and Gerald Neiman named to arrange an RYP dance.
President Eisenhower voiced hope that U S talks with South Korea's Syngman Rhee could settle the truce dispute and move toward peaceful Korean reunification after an armistice. He warned results uncertain while noting Communist agreement to proceed. He also urged more U S atomic information and outlined a libraries directive.
A father and his two sons, Gordon Rainey and ages 13 and 8, survived six days lost in the Wind River mountains. They were found near Pinedale by three ranchers after the man kept fires burning and rationed matches. The party remained in good condition.
In Des Moines a jet fighter crashed into a brick home injuring an elderly resident. Neighbor John Den Boer forced a door and carried 85 year old Marguerite Wilson to safety, while the pilot Lt Bruce Fountain suffered burns and was hospitalized.
American infantry of the 7th Division stormed Porkchop Hill and regained the crest and eastern slopes after hours of heavy Communist artillery. Chinese forces had briefly seized the hill, but the Americans reported advancing to push Reds from western approaches and expanding their territory by about 20 percent.

New York hospital announced Senator Robert A. Taft underwent an exploratory operation to gain precise knowledge of his hip disorder. Doctors from Cincinnati Washington and New York attended the procedure. Taft stood the operation well and was said to be improving with an expected two week hospital stay.
